EDWARD MACKERT & PETER BERGER, MD
CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH ENDOWMENT
Sisters and co-workers, Stephanie Derk and Kim Moyer have been Geisinger employees for more than 20 years. During this time, they often heard stories from patients who were grateful for the care they received. When their father, Edward Mackert, suffered a massive heart attack on August 2, 2009, the family experienced firsthand the exceptional care that Geisinger’s cardiovascular team provides to patients.
On the day of his heart attack, Mr. Mackert was rushed to the GMC Emergency Room and transported to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Steph and Kim felt confident their father was in the best hands. “As a Geisinger employee, I am well aware of the excellent physicians and staff on board,” Kim says. “But when a family member needs care, it really hits home. I knew as soon as I saw Dr. Berger, the cardiologist on call that Sunday, that dad had received the best possible care from him and his team.”
During the procedure, Mr. Mackert’s heart stopped three separate times. Peter Berger, MD, and the cardiovascular team saved his life each time.
“Thanks to the great care he received, including follow up care from Dr. Nassef and Dr. Good, our father has been able to share many more memories with friends and family,” Steph says, “including two grandsons’ weddings.”
Today, Mr. Mackert is spending more time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He celebrated his 75th birthday and his 56th wedding anniversary with them in 2012.
To honor their father, Dr. Berger, and the entire team who saved their father’s life, Steph and Kim, along with family, co-workers and friends, started the Edward Mackert & Peter Berger, MD Cardiovascular Research Endowment. They are grateful for the care their dad received . . . and thankful he will be celebrating more milestones with his family for years to come.
