HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENTS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Healthcare facilities today do so much more than simply "house" the sick and injured.
They are also home to advanced and highly specialized clinical programs, sophisticated diagnostic equipment, and essential electronic networking capabilities. In Geisinger’s case, we have made a commitment to bring a wide spectrum of advanced medical services to communities throughout the region – close to where people live and work.
With the support of our donors, over the past 10 years Geisinger has invested $1.2 billion in capital improvements and projects, such as the Hospital for Advanced Medicine in Danville, the new Critical Care Building and Level II Trauma Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, the only state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Luzerne County at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, and a multispecialty clinic at Gray’s Woods near State College. In addition, millions of dollars have been invested in information technology and telemedicine services.
The demand for Geisinger quality care is increasing throughout the region, so too is the demand for new and improved facilities. For example, we have pledged to invest nearly $170 million over seven years to enhance patient care at Geisinger-Community Medical Center and in other areas of Lackawanna County. Other major priorities include the enhancement of health information technology at Geisinger-Bloomsburg Hospital in Columbia County, construction of a new Laboratory Services Building in Montour County to replace the existing, century-old facility, and the expansion of the Gray’s Woods campus to include an ambulatory surgery center. New primary care offices are also planned for Nanticoke, Mt. Pleasant, and Orwigsburg as we continue our commitment to provide Geisinger quality care in far-reaching communities.
In addition, Geisinger’s vision incorporates a substantial investment in technology that will support clinical outreach. One such example is Geisinger’s telehealth program. Through the use of broadband and the internet, Geisinger is able to partner with community hospitals throughout the region to provide greater access to both specialty and primary care, particularly in remote areas.
