Helping Community Clinics Serve Another Day

Supporting free healthcare for the uninsured in Mifflinville, PA
Living in the space between limited healthcare access and no health insurance can be frightening.

High unemployment and low incomes force many families and seniors in our region to choose between food and medical care.

In Mifflinville, PA, free clinics like the Columbia County Volunteers in Medicine help fill the gap. From fixing scrapes to diagnosing serious health conditions, no to low-cost healthcare makes a real difference in the lives of people who can’t afford a doctor.

But with massive federal and state budget cuts to public health resources each year, free clinics like these need continuous operational support to fulfill their mission.

Geisinger is there

Donating support to community caregivers
Good health shouldn’t depend on a person’s ability to pay. That’s why Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital (G-BH) donates vital medical services such as lab work, X-rays, cat scans, ultrasounds and MRIs to Columbia County Volunteers in Medicine (CCVM) each year.

G-BH began its partnership with CCVM in 2007, and since then has provided in-kind diagnostic services, while our medical staff actively volunteers to support the clinic’s goal of reaching anyone in the community who needs help.

This partnership allows public and private health care services to function better, maximizes resources and creates a culture of caring that never depends on a patient’s income.

Healthy community spirit
The clinic provides non-emergency health care free of charge to the working uninsured who meets the income eligibility guidelines.  A group of medical and support volunteers give their time and skills to assist working uninsured Columbia County and Southern Luzerne County (i.e. Shickshinny, Nescopeck and Salem Township) residents who are in need of medical services.
The clinic provides primary and preventive care for the following:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Asthma

In addition to the primary and preventive care services the clinic also provides:

  • Education
  • Routine physicals
  • Referrals
