Geisinger Health Plan Family

No-cost coverage focused on health. Not premiums.
How much money you have shouldn’t determine when you see a doctor. Yet for so many under and uninsured families in our region, it comes down to just that.

And when it’s a choice between a full pantry and healthcare, healthcare rarely wins.

This means emergency departments are often the first resort for area residents who don’t have a health plan. The question: How do you offer quality healthcare coverage to those who would normally not be able to afford it?

Emergency rooms are overused for non-emergency health issues because of limited medical care for the under/uninsured in our area—and resistance to seek primary care at the first sign of symptoms.

Redefining health coverage
Good healthcare starts with prevention, not payment books.

That’s why Geisinger Health Plan Family (GHP Family) works with the Pennsylvania Medical Assistance HealthChoices program, to help low income families stay ahead of health problems with routine physician visits.

With GHP Family, pregnant women can receive easy-to-understand, real-world prenatal education, including ways to quit unhealthy habits. Cancer patients can learn how to maintain energy during exhausting treatment. There is an after-hours health advice line staffed by nurses. They even offer weight loss coaching.

Changing healthcare delivery
Our care managers become partners in good health with GHP Family members, especially those with chronic conditions to ensure they’re getting the right care, at the right time in the right setting.

A health plan with a plan for good health
All eligible Medical Assistance recipients receive comprehensive health coverage under GHP Family. Many services are covered at no cost, including:

  • Doctor’s office visits (including OB/GYN)
  •  Emergency care
  • Preventive services (such as immunizations)
  • Certain cancer screenings
  • Diabetes care
  • Well-woman and maternity care
  • Dental and vision services
  • Prescription drugs
  • And much more
