Genetic Counseling

Couples dealing with infertility issues, or those who wish to have a child but have concerns about their past genetic histories, can take advantage of a full range of genetic counseling services at Geisinger.

Our Genetic Specialists are highly skilled, and work alongside certified genetic counselors to help identify and treat rare diseases and common conditions. We are concerned about your health, and how these conditions might affect your ability to conceive in the future.

Genetic counseling is particularly helpful if you:

  • Have undergone fertility tests and a specific cause has not been determined
  • You are a woman 35 years or older

Genetic counseling is also provided through Geisinger’s Obstetrics program, for:

  • Families of babies with birth defects or known genetic conditions
  • Anyone who has a family history of a known genetic condition or birth defect
  • Anyone who has a family history of cancer, especially a history of cancer at a younger-than-average-age
  • Anyone exposed to certain drugs, medications, or chemicals during pregnancy
  • Pregnant women 35 years or older, or pregnant women of any age who have had an unusual blood test or ultrasound result

Center for Prenatal Pediatrics

You’ll talk with a counselor in a private, comforting setting. Depending on your situation, you may choose to have one of several genetic tests. Most involve simple blood work from one or both partners. These samples undergo extensive scientific analysis to determine risk factors and other issues.
