Geisinger also provides a full-time lactation consultant. Diane Hertzog is board certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. In her twenty-six years at Geisinger, Diane has been a Labor and Delivery nurse for 20 years, before completing an 18-month course in lactation and establishing the position of lactation consultant. Diane's day starts in the newborn nursery, seeing all the breastfeeding mother-baby couples, she then moves to the NICU to support and assist mothers in maintaining a milk supply or helping the premature infant go to breast, she also does one-on-one prenatal consults.

The unique part of the program is the return visits on day 5, 6, 7,or 8 of the baby's life. Mom's are becoming sleep deprived and begin to question their ability to feed their infant and this is the time most will give up. During the visit, Diane puts the baby on the scale, and watches the pride and joy in the mom's eyes as she sees the baby has gained weight.  he goal is to empower the mother to trust her judgment and instincts and increase her self esteem.

Geisinger has received awards for its policies and procedures, discharge instructions and the return clinic and been named Model Hospital for Breastfeeding Policies by the Pennsylvania Breastfeeding Coalition. Geisinger is the only hospital in the northeast with a position dedicated Lactation Consultant.
