Cancer

Cancer. Just the word causes alarm. But Geisinger offers its patients new hope, bringing the latest advances in chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical techniques to central and northeastern Pennsylvania. The challenge is to meet the demand of our public that people with cancer require. We will improve the health of the communities we serve by focusing the integrated resources of Geisinger Health System on reducing the burden of cancer. Our coordinated approach is characterized by superior quality patient care, emphasis on education for cancer prevention and early detection, and on research.

According to the National Cancer Institute, the annual U.S. cancer diagnoses will rise by 23% by the year 2010.

The U.S. population will have 13% of the population over the age of 65 by year 2010. In 2003, Geisinger Medial Center diagnosed 1,642 new cancer cases, with the top five diagnoses being skin, breast, prostate, colon, and lung cancer.

Geisinger is dedicated to bringing sophisticated medical care to this region so patients don’t have to travel to congested urban centers for their care.

To that end, we’ve brought physicians who have trained at the nation’s top cancer institutions, including Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York City, the Mayo Clinic, Dartmouth and the National Institutes of Health to Pennsylvania.

Mohammed Mohiuddin, MD, Medical Director, Henry Cancer Center and staffer use advancved technology to diagnose and treat cancer patients.

Geisinger’s extraordinary multidisciplinary team brings a comprehensive slate of services to the region through specialized clinics that offer patients advanced diagnostic and treatment opportunities at a single location. Due to the strategic alliance at Geisinger Wyoming Valley between the Frank & Dorothea Henry Cancer Center and the Fox Chase Cancer Center we are able to deliver the highest possible quality of cancer care with the most recent clinical research data.

Cancer Services at Geisinger Medical Center will begin expansion plans with the relocation of the radiation oncology department to Knapper Clinic’s second floor. By 2008, a new freestanding cancer center on the first floor of Knapper will provide easy access for patients receiving sometime daily radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
