Geisinger Truly Cares About Our Patients

Alexandra & John Estey

Alexandra Estey, known to her family and friends as Alix, is a generous woman who firmly says that she didn’t donate to Geisinger to get thanks. “I donated to say thanks,” she says. The thank- you was for saving her life nearly four years ago. “We are so lucky in this country. We should give back and support the hospitals and physicians who care for us,” she says.

Alix knows about the medical care in other countries, having spent a large portion of her life living and traveling abroad. She has visited exotic places such as Kenya and South Africa and once, while needing treatment, had a physician sterilize a needle with her husband’s aftershave lotion.

It is because of all her travels, she jokingly says she has a Belgian son and a French daughter. Her son was born while Alix was living in Brussels and her daughter entered the world in the front seat of a car rapidly trying to make it to a Versailles clinic.

Of her health ordeal, she says, “I wouldn’t be here if Geisinger hadn’t been there. It’s as simple as that.” Alix celebrated a milestone birthday between the two surgeries that ultimately saved her life. “There is something special about Geisinger,” she says. “The doctors truly care about their patients. I felt a genuine personal concern for me.”

Alix and her husband John, a retired senior partner in a Philadelphia law firm, spend their summers in Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania. She still enjoys traveling and often sees her son who works for a cosmetics company in France. She has plans in the near future to visit her daughter, a pulmonary critical care physician in Guam, who is expecting another baby. “She already has a set of twins so she’s looking forward to my help,” says Alix.

“I wouldn’t be here for them had it not been for Geisinger,” Alix says. “Geisinger physicians and staff not only saved my life, they made it liveable.” Alix adds that she will never forget when she was leaving the hospital and the surgeon came in to say goodbye. “He knew I was in pain but asked if he could give me a hug,” she remembers. “I am constantly blown away by the sophistication, the quality and the humanity of the care.” “That,” she says firmly, “is why I love Geisinger.”
