Marie Lamey Memorial Fund

“Marie could walk into the room of an emotionally distressed patient, talk one-on-one, and the patient would emerge ready to go, with new resolve.”
        - James Evans, MD

Marie Lamey dedicated her professional career to women’s health. She spent the last 20 of her 30 years at Geisinger Medical Center in the Breast Clinic, the first nurse at Geisinger solely dedicated to breast care.

She was known for her calming effect on patients, finding the elusive “right thing to say” to newly diagnosed and distraught breast cancer patients. Time spent with Marie was both soothing and strengthening — qualities that her co-workers came to count on, as well as her patients. Since Marie’s death in February, 2011, the Multi-Disciplinary Breast Cancer Team has felt her absence every day.

“Marie took care of all of us. And when she spoke, she commanded your attention – in a good way. You just wanted to hear what she had to say.”
        -- Ellen Leighow, RN

In memory and celebration of Marie Lamey’s life and work, her family, friends, and colleagues are establishing the Marie Lamey Memorial Fund to benefit women with breast disease and the nurses who care for them.

Marie’s Fund will provide medical and non-medical financial assistance for patients, such as mammography screenings. Gifts to the fund will also support nursing education. And, all income will stay close to home, benefiting patients and nurses who live and work in Geisinger’s service area. To goal is to reach an endowment level of $25,000. This will insure that gifts in Marie’s name will continue to generate support, in perpetuity, for the causes she cherished.

“She was a remarkable patient advocate, always going above and beyond – known for weekend visits to patients’ homes to care for their dressings and special needs.”
