Influenza spreads mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. Similar to regular or seasonal flu, nH1N1 flu symptoms include:

  • Fever (100° F or higher)
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue

It is important to take steps now to help stop the spread of flu

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water - especially after you cough or sneeze, use the bathroom, or touch public surfaces such as elevator buttons, door handles, etc. Alcohol-based hand cleansers are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth - germs spread that way.
  • Stay home if you are ill. The United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends limiting contact with other people to keep from infecting them if you have flu symptoms, including a fever.

A Note on Flu Vaccine(s)

  • Be sure to get your seasonal flu shot.
  • A vaccine for H1N1 flu has been developed. Watch for news on the availability of nH1N1 vaccine and talk to your healthcare professional about receiving this vaccine as well.
