How to Prepare Your Household

In the event of influenza pandemic, it is likely that stores may be closed, open only on a limited basis, or have limited inventory. If you cannot get to a store, the stores are out of supplies or are experiencing interruptions in electrical service or other utilities, it will be important for you to have extra supplies on hand:storing water

  • Store at least a two-week supply of non-perishable food and fresh water for emergencies. Choose foods that do not need to be refrigerated or cooked. Count on needing one gallon of water per person daily, which includes drinking, food preparation and sanitation needs.
  • Consider special needs such as formula and baby food for infants and toddlers, or nutritional supplements for the elderly or ill. Examples of appropriate foods include: ready to eat canned meats and fish, canned fruits, canned vegetables, canned soups, protein or fruit bars, dry cereal or granola, peanut butter or nuts, dried fruit, crackers, canned juices, bottled water and other non-perishable foods.storing food
  • Talk to your doctor about obtaining an extra supply of your prescriptions. It is important that you continue taking your medications as prescribed.
  • Have a supply of non-prescription drugs and other health supplies on hand. Examples include medical supplies such as glucose and blood pressure monitoring equipment, soap, alcohol-based hand sanitizer, pain relievers such as aspirin/acetaminophen/ibuprofen, thermometer, cough and cold medications, stomach remedies and anti-diarrhea medicine, vitamins, fluids with electrolytes, flashlight, portable radio, batteries, manual can opener, garbage bags, paper products such as tissues, toilet paper, disposable diapers, paper towels and napkins.
  • Remember to plan for the needs of your pets. Have enough pet food and water to keep them happy and healthy.
