What should I do if I become sick?

Like seasonal flu, nH1N1 flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe. Those people who develop flu-like symptoms should contact their health care provider. He or she will determine if influenza testing or treatment is required. If you are sick with respiratory symptoms and fever, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible. If you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs, seek emergency medical attention:

In children, warning signs that require urgent medical attention include:do you have a fever?

  • Fast breathing or difficulty breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Limited intake of fluids
  • Difficulty waking up or interacting
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
  • Fever with a rash

In adults, warning signs that require urgent medical attention include:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting

NOTE—Be sure to call your healthcare provider in advance and inform them of your influenza symptoms—so they are prepared to isolate/mask you if you need to be seen by your doctor.
