Getting back to running – and then taking a run at the state championship
Fast and focused care at Geisinger helped one local athlete return to the field, and make school history In central and northeastern Pennsylvania, high school football is serious business. So missing a game – or an entire season – due to an injury can be heartbreaking. Selinsgrove High School cornerback Cameron B. safely got back to his game after an ACL tear and helped his school advance further in the state playoff system than ever before. One practice changes everythingDuring an average practice during Cameron’s sophomore year, a misplaced hit in a live tackling drill tore his right ACL and took him out of play for the rest of the season. After the injury, Cameron watched his team play into the state quarterfinals, from the sideline. “It was a good motivator to get healthy,” Cameron says. An MRI, and fast resultsCameron went to the Sports Medicine facility at Geisinger – Woodbine Lane in Danville. Chief of Sports Medicine Dan Feldmann, MD, diagnosed the muscle tear, and a corrective surgery was scheduled within a week. “Geisinger Sports Medicine offers same and next-day appointments for injured athletes, including Saturdays,” says Dr. Feldmann. “It’s very important to see and treat these types of injuries quickly. The sooner we can see them, we decrease the likelihood of complications, and the sooner they can get back to their sports.” Extra attention helps during rehab“Dr. Feldmann was always very attentive,” says Cameron. “If I had questions or anything, he always took the time to answer them or explain what was happening.” Geisinger/HealthSouth Physical Therapist Ryan McGlaughlin also helped to keep Cameron active and engaged in his rehabilitation. By challenging Cameron to do more difficult exercises and finding ways to make the exercises interesting, Ryan helped Cameron make the most of his rehabilitation. “Ryan really helped to keep me on track with my recovery. Having some fun made the process seem less difficult,” says Cameron. | Cameron's Story

A safe return
Six months after the injury, Cameron was back ‘up to speed’ and running on the track team. At the start of the next football season, he was fully recovered. By the end of the season, he was still healthy and helping his team earn the Heartland Conference Championship, District IV AAA Championship; and win the Eastern Quarter-Final.
Cameron reflects, “We had a great season. I’m so glad to have been a part of it, and my team at Geisinger truly helped me to recover and compete at that high level.”
