JJ Outlaw's Story

For professional athletes, injuries are a part of the job.

One player explains how Geisinger Sports Medicine helps his team beat the competition.

High speed and high impact.  Intense competition.  In professional football, pain is a part of the game. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneer wide-receiver J.J. Outlaw understands the value of having experienced sports medicine specialists on the sidelines. He also understands what makes Geisinger the right choice for his sports-related injuries.

Today’s injury report

With 11 wins and 3 losses, J.J.’s team is preparing to make a run in the AF2 playoffs. Besides the fierce competition, another major obstacle to victory is keeping the talent on the field.

“It’s important to keep the best players on the field.  That’s where Geisinger comes in,” J.J. says.  “I’m always working with our Geisinger trainers.  Right now I’m battling a heal and ankle problem in my left foot, and I’ve been working with our trainer every day this week.”

In this case – and for every injury that occurs – the first step is for the Geisinger Sports Medicine team to asses the injury and devise a plan.  Under their advice, J.J.’s been using a combination of rest, ice and balance training to strengthen his ankle for the next game.

“We make a plan and stick to it,” he says. “We have to get my ankle prepared to take the stress during this week’s game.”

The Geisinger’s Sports Medicine team also plays an important role in protecting the players when they are not ready to perform.

“The Geisinger people are true professionals, and on behalf of my teammates, we are blessed to have them on our team.  The players and the coaches have great relationships with Geisinger, and we respect their opinions. The trainers and physicians communicate about injuries between the coaches and players, and do a great job, which is so important, especially in football.”

Speaking from experience

In addition to his time spent with the Philadelphia Eagles, NFL Europe and his career with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers, J.J. has a lifetime of experience in professional locker rooms.

“I’ve been involved in pro sports for my entire life. My father had an 11-year career in the NFL, coached in the NBA for 13 years, and coached college football,” he explains.

As a result, J.J.’s been involved with sports medicine programs throughout the country, and says that Geisinger’s Sports Medicine program and facilities are “second-to-none.”

“I’ve always been around sports medicine, even when the sports didn’t pertain to me,” says J.J.  If a hospital cared for one of my father’s teams, that’s where I went for my care.  Now, I’ve been treated by a number of programs and hospitals in my own career, and I can tell you that Geisinger ranks at the top of the list.”
