Geisinger announces $60 million expansion project- Critical Care Tower under construction
gwv expansion plan - architect's rendering

The Geisinger Health System Board of Directors has approved a $60 million expansion plan for the Geisinger Wyoming Valley campus.  A new Critical Care Building will be added to the rear of Geisinger Wyoming Valley’s main building, increasing overall space by 45 percent.

The above average temperatures have meant great progress for the Critical Care Tower. The concrete footer is being placed now and the walls for the lower level are being constructed. With excavation, steel and concrete bids awarded, we are well on schedule for our targeted October 2008 opening.

Highlights

  • Construction – groundbreaking Fall 2006, completion within two years
  • New space – four floors; approximately 136,000 square feet
  • Expanded emergency services department will accommodate more than 30,000 visits per year.
  • New surgical suite will include additional operating room facilities as well as room for inpatient expansion.

Surgical suite will support image retrieval, robotics, interventional equipment, minimally invasive surgery and future surgical technologies.

Geisinger has been recruiting new physicians with a wide range of specialties, including many surgeons, to the Wyoming Valley area.  Expanding Geisinger Wyoming Valley’s operating room facilities will enable further growth of surgical services and the development of tertiary and quaternary level services, which will also complement the ongoing enhancements at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.

“Geisinger is investing in the health of this region,” said Dr. Glenn Steele, President and Chief Executive Officer. “As the population ages, technology increases, and medicine becomes more sophisticated, we need to continually enhance our programs and services so that we can provide the best possible care for our patients.”

Along with new facility construction in Tunkhannock as well as upgrades and renovations currently underway at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, Geisinger Wyoming Valley’s major expansion project demonstrates Geisinger’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery to the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
