WILKES-BARRE–Officials have ceremoniously broken ground on the $15 million expansion of The Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley. The Geisinger Fox Chase cancer program at The Henry Cancer Center is a partnership between Geisinger Health System and Fox Chase Cancer Center of Philadelphia. Anticipated opening is April 2009. The two-story expansion, with more than 32,000 square feet of space, is scheduled to open in spring 2009 and will triple the existing facility in size. It will house 14 additional chemotherapy and infusion chairs and 20 additional exam rooms- space required for program expansion like multidisciplinary clinics for breast cancer, lung cancer, and a brain tumor program. The expansion will also feature patient and family amenities like a wellness center, healing garden and common space for patient gathering. The facility will also provide space for future expansion of patient education rooms and an auditorium. “Our construction projects demonstrate the depth of Geisinger’s investment in the health of this region,” said Geisinger CEO & President Dr. Glenn Steele Jr. “Today’s groundbreaking for the expansion of The Henry Cancer Center marks another step in that direction.” Geisinger has committed more than $200 million to various construction projects, which include a $60 million Critical Care Building at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, $21 million to build the Center for Health Research in Danville, $4 million to build the new Geisinger Medical Group specialty clinic in Tunkhannock and $35 million for a multi-specialty physician office building at Grays Woods near State College.
