Building on the Future
Two-and-a-half years after breaking ground, the Hospital for Advanced Medicine at Geisinger Medical Center welcomed its first patients on Feb. 9, 2010.
The Hospital for Advanced Medicine is an investment on behalf of Geisinger Health System to serve the people of central and northeastern Pennsylvania. This new facility brings together specialized staff and new technologies to care for some of the most critically ill patients in the region – delivering complex and compassionate care in the most convenient setting.
Hospital for Advanced Medicine
The Hospital for Advanced Medicine totals 308, 000 square feet – the size of more than five football fields.
Housed in the building’s nine stories of flexible, patient-centered, technology-focused space are:
- Four operating rooms in a 32,000-square-foot surgical suite
- Geisinger’s Heart & Vascular Institute: A team of Geisinger cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and vascular surgeons working together to offer cardiovascular and vascular care that's equivalent to the nation's best programs.
- Two inpatient nursing units, with 60 single-occupancy rooms, 30 of which are acuity-adaptable, with state-of the art wireless monitoring and communications
- Two floors of physician office space specializing in cardiac and vascular care
We’ve also allocated room for growth — whether it’s to accommodate new medical or surgical technology, or to allow us to make innovative changes in the way we deliver care.
Launching simultaneously with the opening of the Hospital for Advanced Medicine is our Electronic Intensive Care Unit (eICU) program. The eICU technology has been incorporated into the seventh floor inpatient nursing unit. It allows highly trained Geisinger physicians and nurses to remotely and continuously monitor our most critical patients complementing our physicians and nurses on the floor who directly care for the patients.
Hospital for Advanced Medicine
The Hospital for Advanced Medicine is an integrated center for the most critically ill and injured patients, with beds that can convert from intensive care to recovery as the patient progresses.
A Hospital within a Hospital
The Hospital for Advanced Medicine has been designed using a “hospital within hospital” concept, creating an opportunity to house the resources of the Geisinger Heart & Vascular Institute in one convenient location. By gathering these services together within one building, we leverage the interdisciplinary strengths of our team of cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and vascular surgeons to offer care that’s among the nation’s best programs.
For patients, this not only means world-class healthcare, it means “one-stop shopping” for all their cardiac and vascular healthcare needs.
Acuity Adaptable Care
The seventh floor of the Hospital for Advanced Medicine features a state-of-the-art acuity adaptable care model. The inpatient nursing unit has been specifically designed and staffed to allow the patient rooms, beds, and care intensity to adapt as our cardiac patients progress through the healing process.
The appropriate level of care will come to the patient rather than the patient moving to a new level of care. As a result, patients will stay in one room surrounded by the same care team throughout their stay. And, family and visitors will become quickly familiar with the facility allowing easier navigation through their surroundings.
New Parking Garage
We know you have enough on your mind when you come to a hospital for services or a visit. Finding parking should not be one of your worries. Our new covered parking garage will hold an additional 600 vehicles, and provide covered access directly into the new Hospital for Advanced Medicine in late spring 2010.
