An ideal place for moms and babies
Located in a private wing of Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, the obstetrics department features all private “Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Post-Partum” (LRDP) suites with soft colors and relaxing wood tones.
The wing also includes two dedicated operating rooms for cesarean section births, a team of childbirth educators and lactation consultants so that mother, baby, family and friends never need to leave the unit.
The nursery creates a comfortable and safe environment for newborns where families can watch them get washed, weighed, foot printed, and more.
Geisinger also allows “rooming-in,” so that newborns can stay close to their mothers and enhance the bonding relationship.
Women’s and Children’s Expansion Project Completed
Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center completed a major expansion of women’s and children’s services in October 2011.
The $10.2 million project includes:
- The 12-bed Tambur Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only NICU in Luzerne County providing care for premature infants and other babies in need of highly specialized medical care.
- An expansion of the women’s unit to provide 15 additional private rooms equipped with the most advanced technology for postpartum and postoperative care.
- An expansion of the Childbirth Center to provide two new labor triage areas for enhanced labor and delivery capabilities.
On average, one in ten newborn babies needs some level of neonatal intensive care. When such specialized care is required, it is vital to have it immediately available.
