The primary goal of the fellowship will be the provision of comprehensive training in Mohs micrographic surgery, reconstructive skin surgery, and other dermatologic surgical procedures. A systematic review of appropriate topics related to Mohs micrographic surgery and dermatologic surgery will be undertaken. The fellow will participate in teaching students, residents and staff in the Department of Dermatology, as well as in lectures and CME courses on cutaneous surgery given in the Geisinger System.

In 2007, a total of more than 3000 Mohs surgery cases were performed, as well as more than 1000 flaps/grafts and more than 1200 complex closures. Each case is performed under the direct supervision of a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, and the fellow is intimately involved in the majority of these cases. The fellow will learn to prepare horizontal frozen sections and, with a multi-headed teaching microscope, will read virtually all microscopic slides with the director.

In addition to Mohs micrographic surgery, the fellow will become skilled in laser surgery, excisional surgery, advanced closures, nail surgery, sclerotherapy, chemical peel, dermabrasion and scar revision techniques. Botox injection techniques are also taught.

Under supervision of the director, the fellow is expected to initiate research projects leading to publication and/or presentation. A generous stipend is provided to attend national and regional conferences. Fellows receive a stipend and benefits commensurate with the PGY-5 training level.
