With close to 150 EM programs in this country, why not consider one with deep roots and experience in preparing residents to practice emergency medicine? Our residency program was founded in 1976, making ours the 12th most established program in the country. Three of our senior academic clinicians have been with this program from the very beginning, contributing their years of experience and knowledge to our residents everyday. And along the way, we’ve proven ourselves time and again with continued, full accreditation from the ACGME Residency Review Committee, with a five-year renewal during their last site visit in July, 2007. Our program offers you an experienced, established, and stable environment in which to learn your specialty. Educational opportunities
There are, of course, basic educational guidelines that each program must follow to remain accredited to provide an EM program, and you will spend the majority of your training in the emergency department of wherever you go. But consider this: would you get more out of your residency education by doing more critical care rotations as opposed to general medicine, surgery, or pediatric floor rotations? We think so. Our curriculum is structured to give residents a total of six months of critical care experience beyond the ED, and we do not have any general floor medicine in our program. Ultrasound is another important facet of emergency medicine, a fact we recognized in 1991 when our ultrasound curriculum was established. Simulation medicine? We have that, too, with our very own lab that provides residents with high-fidelity, hands-on experience in handling rare life-threatening emergencies in a controlled educational setting. Our program offers you educational opportunities designed to maximize your training in emergency and critical care medicine, incorporating ultrasound training for more than 17 years, and using the latest technology available to augment your learning experiences. Just because we are situated in a rural part of Pennsylvania does not mean we run a rural emergency department. Our five LifeFlight helicopters keep us busy, bringing us the most acutely ill and injured patients from more than 30 counties serving more than 2,000,000 people. We see more than 40,000 patients per year, and we are a Level I Trauma Center for both adults and pediatrics. And, unlike some programs, we see children and adults everyday in our department, so you won’t have to wait until your “pediatric ED month” to see kids. Our program offers you a wide variety of patients of all ages with all spectrums of illness and injury, every day you come to work. LifeFlight and EMS
Emergency medical services (EMS) is a subset of emergency medicine unique to our specialty, and you will benefit from our EMS experiences and activities. Want to be an assistant EMS medical director? We can do that. Want to look at EMS from an administrative, statewide point of view? Our program director, Doug Kupas, MD, serves as the EMS Medical Director for Pennsylvania. Four of our faculty served as paramedics or EMTs at some time in their careers. Want to fly? As a resident at Geisinger, you become a part of the LifeFlight team. As the flight physician, you will respond to scene calls as a part of your daily ED duties. Your aeromedical experiences won’t be limited to just an observation month once during your training. Our program offers you the opportunity to be a part of our aeromedical crew, and will give you unique ways to be involved in EMS activities throughout your training. Lifestyle
