Conferences The Geisinger Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program provides a wide array of lectures to complement our active inpatient education. Our goal is to give each medical resident a broad base of knowledge with didactic education in addition to clinical education. Resident report 11:45 am - 12:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday A daily presentation by the resident staff from both the General Internal Medicine Service as well as Subspecialties Services. A resident presents the history and physical examination with pertinent laboratory studies. A comprehensive list of differential diagnosis is generated with appropriate studies to be done. The session is moderated by the Chief Medical Resident and is attended by a number diverse faculty, who add their expertise to the discussion. Noon conference 12:30 - 1:30 pm Monday-Thursday A daily didactic lectures presented by the attending staff. These lectures are designed to cover the core curriculum. Grand rounds 12:30 - 1:30 pm Friday A weekly conference for the Division of Medicine presented by visiting professors, guest physicians as well as Geisinger Medical Center faculty. Morbidity & Mortality conference 12:30 - 1:30 pm one Thursday a month A monthly interdisciplinary conference for the review of cases in which morbidity or mortality has occurred. The cases are presented by a resident with the focus of the discussion on quality and performance improvement. Board review course 11:45 am - 12:30 pm Wednesday A weekly session, which focuses on topics particularly important for passage of the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Examination. The topics vary monthly and are based on the Medical Knowledge Self Assessment Program. Intern report 11:45 am - 12:30 pm Wednesday A weekly session for interns only. An intern presents a case from the General Medical Service. The faculty moderator focuses on the teaching of case presentation skills and clinical reasoning. Journal club 12:30 - 1:30 pm Wednesday twice monthly A bimonthly faculty-led session focused on teaching house officers how to interpret and critique study designs and conclusions of journal articles. During one segment a resident presents an article and the other residents critically appraise that article. In the other segment another resident presents the summary of 5 clinically relevant articles that have been recently critically appraised through a formal publication (i.e. Journal watch, ACP journal Club). |
