The Internal Medicine Residency is growing and now comprises 16 categorical interns, 16 second year residents, 16 third year residents and three preliminary interns. The affiliated Medicine/Pediatrics Residency now has five residents in each of the four years of training. Our curriculum is designed to give housestaff a strong foundation in general internal medicine outpatient and inpatient care, cardiology and intensive care. Residents also attend required educational retreats focused on ethics, practice management and research, among others. All residents complete a rotation on each of the medicine subspecialties, allowing for breadth of training. Residents may opt to do a continuity clinic in the specialty of their choice if further experience in a specialty is desired. Geisinger boasts a long tradition of providing excellent patient care through exceptional nursing and physician service. To aid in this endeavor, 24-hour ancillary support is available, including phlebotomy, IV, radiology technicians and patient transport teams. Filmless radiology and electronic medical records allow for the provision of technologically advanced care. Electronic access to educational resources, such as Up-to-Date, MD Consult, ACP Medicine, Harrisons, Medline, and many journals, is easily available and free of charge. To ensure excellent care by our housestaff, we are strict about work hour regulations and oversight. Finally, residents have the opportunity to practice both procedural and communication skills in a structured, non-clinical setting. Our skills lab includes simulators for pelvic and breast exam, intubation, hemodynamic monitoring, endoscopy, arthrocentesis, and standardized patient sessions for communication training. All faculty members are employed by Geisinger and based on campus. Each ward team is led by one attending physician who oversees care for all team patients, ensuring availability for patient care and teaching. All required rotations, including consult and outpatient months are at Geisinger Medical Center, and directed and taught by local faculty. In addition to traditional rotations, we offer opportunities for international medical trips and participation in a free clinic for migrant workers during summer months. Specialty training tracks in Hospital-Based Medicine and a combined IM/MPH program are now available. Research opportunities are easily accessible through the Center for Health Research and the Weis Center for Research, both of which are adjacent to Geisinger Medical Center. Geisinger also offers a variety of internal medicine residencies and fellowships including: Internal Medicine-Pediatrics, Rheumatology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Interventional Cardiology, Cardiology Electrophysiology, Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Bariatrics. The success of our training program is evident from our residents’ performance. In the past two years, our ABIM pass rate is 100%. Geisinger has won the American College of Physicians’ Medical Jeopardy Tournament in Pennsylvania for the past two years. Fifty percent of our residents sought and obtained fellowships, and many are accepted into fellowships or stay on staff here at Geisinger.
