Overview
From our clinic support staff to our executive leadership team we are deeply committed to residency training at Geisinger. We feel our program is unique due to the preceptorship style of teaching that has been the mainstay of our orthopaedic education. We have built from this basic structure since the inception of the residency program in the early 1960’s. This model fosters close supervision and graduated autonomy. All staff are full time faculty and 95% of the resident experience is at a single institution, Geisinger Medical Center. This allows us to better evaluate and improve upon each resident’s ability; consequently, residents are allowed earlier autonomy in both the clinic and operating rooms. This generates a confident, capable surgeon by the fifth year of training.

Geisinger continues to grow as a specialty resource and as a high volume level one trauma center to our 31 county region and beyond. This provides our residents with a broad clinical experience including extensive fracture experience. On average, our residents are involved as primary surgeon or first assist on over 2,000 procedures during their residency.

Nearly all resident education occurs within our integrated health care delivery system with the major portion of time spent at Geisinger Medical Center’s 437 bed hospital.

Geisinger Medical Center typically runs 4-6 orthopaedic rooms every day in the 24-room operating suite. The Ambulatory Surgery Center currently has four operating rooms with plans for addition. Our ER and Trauma Bay recently underwent a complete renovation, allowing the trauma team to run 3 simultaneous traumas, complete with immediate digital X-ray and CT scanning. Residents see patients in our 23-room outpatient clinic as well as in our community based outreach clinics in neighboring towns.

Geisnger Medical Center was named one of the Top 100 Hospitals in the nation in 2005. Geisinger Health System has a single unified electronic medical record and PAX digital imaging, allowing full access to information throughout our 31 county system and at home. We maintain a state of the art 50-seat capacity conference room with full digital capability. The residents have their own workroom complete with computer workstations for each physician. Residents have 24-hour intranet and web based access to the electronic health services library which has received national awards, and serves as a regional resource to physicians in and outside of our system. In addition, residents have 24-hour access to a traditional medical library on the ground floor of the hospital and an extensive orthopaedic library in our conference area.
