Q. What type of internships do you offer and how many? A. We now offer a total of 25 internship positions. These are split into Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine-Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Traditional. Each year there is a different mix of each type. All of the tracking internships are linked to their respective residency program. Q. Does the intern year count for AOA credit? Does this meet the guidelines for Pennsylvania licensing? A. All interns who match with us through the AOA intern matching process (National Matching Service) gain AOA credit for the R1 (intern) year. This includes traditional, internal medicine and internal medicine/pediatric, pediatric and obstetrics and gynecology positions. This fulfills the Pennsylvania state licensing board requirement that osteopathic physicians must do an AOA-approved internship for licensure. Q. With what OPTI are you affiliated? A. We are affiliated with the OPTI of Philadelphia of Osteopathic Medicine - MEDNet Q. How is OMT/OPP taught in your program? A. OPP/OMM is incorporated into the curriculum using multiple modalities. Monthy Osteopathic Grand Rounds and Workshops are held. This includes both didactic and hands-on sessions. We also employ both on-line and multimedia learning tools in OPP/OMM. Q. Are their many osteopathic physicians at Geisinger? A. Geisinger's Medical Center's staff is comprised of both M.D.'s and D.O.'s in a group practice model. D.O.'s make up about ten percent of the staff at the medical center and a larger part of the total physicians in the system. The group practice model means that all staff are employed by the medical center with education as a key belief. Q. From which schools do you recruit interns? A. As evidenced by our current interns, we recruit from a broad range of experiences. We feel that it is important to seek a balance of diversity in our housestaff. |
