Grow with Geisinger The department of surgery at Geisinger Medical Center is committed to education superior clinical and academic surgeons. |  | To achieve this goal, the general surgery residency program is structured to provide the opportunity for well qualified and highly motivated individuals to participate in the care of a variety of paitnet problems and in scholarly activites. The residency program is fully accredited and graduates two cheif residents each year (Effective academic year 2008-2009 we will graduate three chiefs per year). Three PGY1 residents are accepted into the categorical program each year, providing a non-pyridmal structure to the program. Two R-1 prelim positions and one R-2 prelim position are available for residents planning to train in other specialty areas of surgery. Residents acheive clinical proficiency through graduated responsibility commensurate with their ability and level of training to deliver an established curriculum(developed by residents and faculty) to the residents. Resident participation in research, either clinical or basic science, is encouraged. An orientation to the clinical skills needed to perform basic preoperative and postoperative surgical care is conducted for incoming interns. |
