| | Introduction | The Family Medicine Clerkship at Geisinger Health System provides the third-year medical student with an excellent educational opportunity to develop and strengthen skills that are essential to the modern practice of family medicine. As such, the student is introduced to the role of the family physician as a community-based expert in continuity care, management of chronic disease and triage, and decisions about acute illness of persons of all ages. Students directly experience and learn about the diverse roles in the family physician by participating in structured activities such as home visits, nursing home visits, rounding in the hospital, pre-sports physicals, and local community meetings. Understanding how a community medical group functions and familiarity with an electronic health record system round out the educational experience. The Family Medicine Clerkship at Geisinger Health System is offered in conjunction with Temple University School of Medicine (core clerkship) and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (core, urban, and rural clerkships). Separate clerkships are tailored to the educational needs and requirements of both allopathic and osteopathic medical students, but specific clerkship objectives all reflect the Accreditation Council for Graduate Education’s (ACGME) general competencies for residents. Adapting the ACGME competencies specifically for the third-year medical student during their family medicine clerkship is intended to facilitate entry into the next level of medical training. Geisinger Health System also offers a subinternship in family medicine for fourth-year students. The sub-intern experience continues to emphasize family medicine as a specialty of depth and breadth and provides further insight into how individual family physicians develop their own styles of practice.
