   Children’s Miracle Network: Public Relations Intern *fILLED*

Danville, PA

Position Summary
The purpose of the internship in the Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger office is to provide a valid experience in fundraising and community and public relations.
The intern is under the direct supervision of a Children’s Miracle Network Coordinator and interacts with the Children’s Miracle Network Public Relations Specialist when working on related assignments.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
The internship will include, but will not be limited to, the following activities and responsibilities:
-Assisting with events and projects related to the Children’s Miracle Network campaign
-Preparing and distributing select Children’s Miracle Network press releases, flyers and other event materials
-Assisting and coordinating select community fundraising events (including annual Spell-a-thons, solicitation letters, presentations, etc.)
-Attending Children’s Miracle Network and public relations staff meetings, as assigned
-Assisting with production needs for television and radio station events, as assigned
-Assisting in other projects, as assigned
-Some local travel may be required
Qualifications
The internship requires excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, a high level of energy, self-motivation, and the ability to work well in a fast-paced office environment. Computer skills are necessary (Microsoft Office).
Special Requirements & Additional Information
If interested, please submit two writing samples (news releases if possible) along with your application.  You may include these in the cover letter section below the text of your cover letter. Please adhere to plain text formatting for the writing samples as well.
Proposed Work Schedule (negotiable): January-February 10 - 15 hours per week; March 15 - 20 hours per week; April 20 - 25 hours per week;
May until graduation 20 - 30 hours per week.
    The intern may have the opportunity to work with the Children’s Miracle Network staff through Celebration Weekend, June 5 – 6, 2010 per the discretion of the Children’s Miracle Network Director. From graduation through Celebration Weekend this position would be paid.

 Interventional Pain Clinic Research Assistant

Position Summary
Assist in special research projects in Interventional Pain Clinic.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
-Assist in writing a research proposal to measure outcomes for patients with chronic pain
-Conduct data collection using electronic medical records
-Assist in data analysis
-Assist with publication(s)
Qualifications
Undergraduate seniors or graduate students in psychology, nursing, biology, pre-med, IT or closely related fields may apply. Prior knowledge of conducting research proposals and publications preferred. The candidate should be self-directed, with good communication skills and computer skills (including Excel and Powerpoint). 
Special Requirements & Additional Information
Minimum GPA of 3.0 required.  Prior coursework in research methods and statistics required.  Strong consideration will be given to senior-level undergraduate students enrolled in a leadership class and/or interested in applying to graduate school.

Responsible for working cooperatively with system and regional public relations staff to develop communications materials in support of the mission and goals of the health system. Reports to the Manager, Public Relations or a department designee.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
The intern’s primary responsibility is to learn as much about the practice of public relations as possible, while bringing serviceable skills to the department and producing appropriately reviewed and supervised communications material. Duties include, but are not limited to:
-Interviewing Geisinger staff and writing press releases (topics may include new physicians, features, and media advisories)
-Assisting in the presentation of events
-Maintaining confidentiality of information and respecting privacy of colleagues
-Assisting PR/marketing staff as assigned
-Assisting in any and all areas including writing, proofreading materials, creative thinking, strategic planning
-Communicating clearly and effectively; tailoring communications according to audience
-Placing posters and other displays
-Participating in Web projects
-Clipping Geisinger stories from local newspapers
-Completing assigned clerical duties
Qualifications
Undergraduate junior or senior with a major in communications, marketing or related field.
Special Requirements & Additional Information
Credit: Geisinger does not offer paid internships in public relations. However, the department will work with the student’s university to ensure the student receives academic credit.
Attire: In a formal business environment, the standard of dressing for men and women is a suit, a jacket and pants or a skirt, or a dress paired with appropriate accessories. Clothing that reveals too much cleavage, your back, your chest, your feet, your stomach or your underwear is not appropriate for a place of business. Employees are expected to be neatly groomed at all times. In our work environment, clothing should be pressed and never wrinkled. Torn, dirty, or frayed clothing is unacceptable. All seams must be finished. Any clothing that has words, terms, or pictures that may be offensive to other employees is unacceptable. (The intern may consult with his or her supervisor to learn specifically what is acceptable to wear.)

Major Duties & Responsibilities
This internship includes the following major duties:
-Solution development and delivery
-Assisting with design, coding and testing of technical solutions
-Understanding standard systems development lifecycle processes
-Applying methodology effectively on client engagements
-Applying knowledge of industry trends and developments to improve service to clients
Qualifications
Major in computer science with working knowledge of at least one structured programming language. Proficiency in HTML and one scripting language.  Basic knowledge of XML/XSL.
