An externship is an experience during which a student works in a Geisinger department or clinic to learn about an occupation. Externs are required by their schools to complete a pre-set curriculum and number of hours. Externships are open to students who have been approved by their schools to complete externship hours, and are enrolled in the program of study/curriculum specified in the externship position listing.

JOB SUMMARY
Working in the Automated Billing Applications and Quality Assurance department, under the supervision of the Manager/Supervisor, the extern performs duties in support of Revenue Cycle Operations.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Tasks will include:
-Designing and producing reports including all data elements for any relevant Revenue Cycle initiative, including, but not limited to, Patient Access, Billing, Collections, Coding and Revenue Capture, Revenue Enhancement, MyVisit, Patient Service Call Center, Corporate Imaging, Credentialing, Credit Balances, and Hospital and Professional Coding
-Providing data for Geisinger Health System customers in an accurate and timely manner
-Working cooperatively with other team members to assess reported field inclusion for data population reliability, consistency and completeness in response to specific data requests
-Assembling and managing recurring data reports as part of the production calendar
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Students enrolled in an information technology, network administration or medical billing and coding program, who must complete externship hours as part of their program of study, may apply. The position requires knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Excel, Word, ACCESS and Power Point; organizational skills; and the ability to perform all functions in the assigned area of responsibility at a high accuracy rate with minimal supervision.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Minimum GPA of 2.5, with 3-4 completed semesters of study, required.

JOB SUMMARY
Working under the supervision of the Manager/Supervisor, Revenue Cycle, the extern performs duties in support of Revenue Cycle Operations.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Tasks will include:
-Analyzing patient accounts in order to provide coordination and completion of patient concerns either in person, via telephone, or from written correspondence
-Collecting outstanding accounts receivable
-Corresponding directly with patients, insurance companies, physicians, attorneys, external business associates, employees, clinic sites and other facilities
-Providing timely and accurate follow-up on all appropriate inquiries
-Maintaining a close working relationship with Geisinger Health System (GHS) staff and affiliated companies to ensure clear communication and handling of all patient concerns
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Students enrolled in a medical billing and coding program, who must complete externship hours as part of their program of study, may apply. The position requires knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office, phone, fax, copier/scanner, and ability to work individually or as part of a team.

REVENUE CYCLE SPECIALIST INTERN: SERVICE LINE SPECIALIST

JOB SUMMARY
Interns will have the opportunity to understand the importance of billing and collection, as well as an understanding of work within a large organization. Students will learn basic occupational skills.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Student will assist with data entry, claim status information and referral linking in EPIC for the Dawnell Morgans area.
Students will shadow billers and follow up with staff to gain an understanding of daily tasks and responsibilities as demonstrated by the employees.
Students will learn in depth process of to ensure clean claim billing.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Students should have excellent computer skills.
Students should be reliable, be able to work independently, and work as part of a team.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Coding majors preferred.
