Shared governance is the backbone of nursing practice and process at Geisinger. The Nursing Department at Geisinger Medical Center is committed to "excellence in patient care, quality, and safety." The philosophy of leadership and direct care applies to the shared governance concepts of accountability, autonomy, competence, and involvement.
To enhance professionalism within the Nursing Department, it is critical to engage the nurse in decisions regarding practice, quality, research, and communication. To that end, the Nursing Department governance structure consists of hospital-wide councils that engage professional nurses in critical practice decisions. See GMC Nursing Governance Structure.
