Spring 2013 Alumni Letter

Dear Alumni:

It is a pleasure for me to reach out to you as President of the Geisinger School of Nursing Alumni Association with this alumni letter. The letter is sent out twice a year to every graduate of the Geisinger School of Nursing to inform you of current and future activities of the Alumni Association and keep everyone engaged with our association. Additionally, those members who submit their annual $5 dues also receive, twice a year, a Nurses’ Alumni Bulletin that offers additional information on our alumni activities and updates from alumni members and friends.

Our June Educational Dinner Meeting will be held on Monday, June 10, 2013
This year’s June function will be held in the Henry Hood Center for Health Research, which is located directly across Center Street from the School of Nursing. Parking will be available in the physician parking lot directly behind the School of Nursing entering from Center Street. The social gathering will begin at 5 pm and dinner will be at 5:30 pm, with our educational speaker starting at 6:30 pm. Our speaker is Rebecca Ruckno, MSW, MBA, Director of Patient Affairs, Geisinger Northeast. Ms. Ruckno will be present the newest Language Access Technology, named MARTTI – My Accessible Real Time Trusted Interpreter. MARTTI provides 170 different languages as well as American Sign Language through remote video. Join us for an evening of fun conversation and an interesting educational presentation. Click to print a copy of the June form.

Our Annual Luncheon will be held on Saturday September 14, 2013
This year’s September function will be held in the Henry Hood Center for Health Research which is located directly across Center Street from the School of Nursing. Parking will be available in the physician parking lot directly behind the School of Nursing entering from Center Street. Registration will begin at 11 am and lunch at noon followed by our guest speaker’s presentation. Our guest speaker is Ms. Chris Raup, RN, a graduate of Geisinger School of Nursing. The School of Nursing will be open for those who wish to tour the building before and after the luncheon. This year we will honor our 50th anniversary graduation class, the Class of 1963.

The Geisinger School of Nursing Alumni Association Award for 2013 will be presented to a 2013 Thomas Jefferson School of Nursing graduate who displays outstanding ethical conduct, leadership, cooperation and participation in community and school activity. We are pleased to be able to offer this yearly award from the Geisinger School of Nursing Alumni Association.

The Geisinger Nursing Alumni Endowment Fund continues to grow with your contributions. The endowment will be used towards continuing education of the Geisinger Medical Center nursing staff. The money donated to the Geisinger Health System Foundation was raised through annual dues and alumni donations. If anyone is interested in contributing to this fund, please contact Denise Stone, Director, Service Line Advancement for Nursing, at dastone@geisinger.edu or 570-214-8846.

If your class is having a reunion year (years ending in 8 and 3) and would like a list of your classmate’s current names and addresses please contact Peg Franklin.  Peg can order only one copy per graduating class. Request your list early when making your plans so Peg has enough time to order it and forward it to you. Remember that if you have news of any reunion activity that you would like included in the newsletter, contact Em Styer, Secretary.

Our alumni website can be viewed by using the links at right. You may print dinner meeting attendance forms, dues and change of information forms from this website. We welcome your ideas, suggestions and comments about this web site. Please send comments to Tamara Persing at: tfpersing@geisinger.edu.

Dues are still $5 per year. Dues paying members receive an additional two alumni letters each year that contain updated information from many of our fellow members in addition to fun facts from our “History Corner.” The form to pay dues will be in the president’s summer letter. Dues are collected between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31 of each year. We never turn down dues and process them as they come in and will continue to do so but dues paid after Dec. 31 skews our audit, so please try your best to get the dues in on time.

If you pay dues ahead, there is no place in our computer system so these are handled on an individual basis by hand. If you believe you have paid your dues for any reason and have not received fout alumni letters each year, please contact us so we can review our records. Members that have paid dues for 30 years and have received a card to say you have become honorary are not required to pay dues. Some members have said they throw mail away from GMC without opening it so we have placed a little message in the bottom left hand corner of our envelopes to say your honorary card is enclosed. If anyone has questions about being an honorary member, please contact Nancy Doran or Margaret Franklin.

We would appreciate your help in locating any “lost” alumni members. Send information about births, marriages, deaths and other alumni news to Margaret Franklin, our recorder. We like to acknowledge these events with a note or card if we have the information. Include your name, middle initial, graduation name, address and year of graduation with all correspondence. This allows us keep accurate records.

Our historian, Nancy Doran, enjoys your stories and likes to share them in the “History Corner” of our newsletter. Her e-mail address is egdoran@verizon.net. Your stories can also be mailed to Nancy at 210 Welsh Road, Danville, PA 17821. Remember, if you are not a dues paying member or an honorary member, you will not receive the newsletters from our Secretary Em Styer with this special history section and the alumni member updates.

Transcript requests can be obtained through the Geisinger Medical Center Nursing Education Department at 570-271-5815. Please allow sufficient time for processing. There is a $5 fee for all transcripts.
