The Geisinger Health Sciences Libraries provide digital and print information on the clinical practice and management of healthcare. Located at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, with a branch site at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, the libraries provide an invaluable service to Geisinger’s clinical and research staff who have access to the facility 24/7.

Both libraries are part of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and two local consortia: the Susquehanna Library Cooperative and the Central Pennsylvania Health Science Library Association.

The main Health Sciences Library in Danville holds a collection of

  • Approximately 3000 book and audiovisual titles, with focus primarily on clinical medicine, nursing and basic science.
  • 2406 journal and e-journal titles.
  • A wide range of databases, including Access Medicine, Access Surgery, Emergency Medical Abstracts, Facts & Comparisons, Harrison’s Online, Health & Wellness Resource Center, MD Consult, Micromedex, Natural Standard, Nursing Consult, OVID (Medline & Cochrane) Unbound Surgery, and UpToDate.

Circulation privileges for books are extended to all patrons who have filled out a library registration form.  Circulation privileges for journals and audiovisuals are also extended to any Geisinger employee who has filled out a registration form; the current (most recently received) issue of a journal may not be circulated. Loan periods are for three weeks with one renewal, provided no other patron has requested the title.

Students and other library users who are not Geisinger employees may not sign out bound or unbound journals, but may photocopy pages at $.10 per page.  Students or faculty of affiliated institutions may also obtain materials through their library’s interlibrary loan department.

A library for patients, their families and members of the community, the Community Health Library located in the main lobby of the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, provides health information in a variety of formats, including electronic resources, books, medical journals/newsletters, pamphlets, videos and databases. Community Health Library patrons also have access to computers with high speed Internet connections and health-related videos. Books and videos may be borrowed for three weeks. Photocopies of materials are free of charge. Photocopying of materials must adhere to the U.S. Copyright Law. All services are free of charge.
