Geisinger's Neurosciences Institute provides a multidisciplinary approach to treating epilepsy. From advancements in monitoring and medical treatments to the latest in surgical procedures, this program is designed to significantly reduce, even eliminate, seizures to improve your patients' quality of life.
When to Refer
Refer your patient to Geisinger when:
- The patient is having active seizures (as few as one or two a year).
- The patient has failed medications two or more times, including an increased dosage of one medication.
- The patient has unresolved epilepsy.
With a team of fellowship-trained epileptologists on staff, Geisinger offers sub-specialty care for adults and children with active seizures.
It's important to get an accurate diagnosis in order to treat patients appropriately. Geisinger specialists first monitor patients closely and can often control seizures with medication modification and management.
Our state-of-the-art monitoring units at both Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes-Barre offers long-term inpatient epilepsy monitoring with video support. We also offer outpatient/ambulatory EEG long-term monitoring.
Our board-certified neurosurgeons specialize in surgical treatments for epilepsy. Geisinger neurosurgeons place electrodes into the brain to record seizure activity. This pinpoints the diseased part of the brain, enabling the surgeons to remove only the affected tissue. Healthy surrounding brain tissue is spared.
Geisinger also has a dedicated pediatric neurosurgeon who is fellowship-trained in both epilepsy and functional neurosurgery as well as pediatric neurosurgery.
Our monitoring unit allows for epilepsy surgery planning with:
- Subdural grid seizure focus mapping for lesion removal in areas of eloquent cortex
- Vagal nerve stimulator
Geisinger neurosurgeons provide epilepsy surgery options, including:
- Temperal lobectomy
- Corpus callosotomy
- Awake craniotomy
