Telemedicine

Using telecommunications to provide excellent patient care

The goal of Geisinger’s Telemedicine program is to provide high quality, highly specialized health care services to more patients and families throughout Geisinger’s extensive, primarily rural service area.

For nearly 20 years, Geisinger has pioneered efforts to build electronic health record systems, integrated health networks and research data bases to improve the way health care is delivered.

Today, Geisinger has been included eight times in Hospitals & Health Networks magazine’s "100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems" list and is continually recognized for finding innovative ways to pair clinical skill with advanced technology to improve patient care.

 For health professionals, telemedicine:

  • Allows doctors and hospitals to deliver specialty care in underserved regions
  • Compensates for shortages of specialists, e.g.: intensivists, perinatalogists
  • Reduces space and resource requirements
  • Increases speed of diagnosis
  • Improves ability to deliver high-quality care

For patients and family members, telemedicine:

  • Reduces travel time, costs and stress
  • Minimizes time away from work
  • Brings medical services closer to home
  • Offers access to providers who may otherwise be unavailable
