Rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatology diseases can cause periods of intense pain and discomfort that impact health and lifestyle. For people who suffer from any number of rheumatology diseases, getting timely access to a rheumatologist can play a key part in alleviation of pain and optimal disease management.
Alfred Denio, MD, Director of the Rheumatology Fellowship Program at Geisinger, talks about the TeleRheumatology services offered by Geisinger and how these services benefit patients:
Through Geisinger’s TeleRheumatology service, which is available at a number of Geisinger community practice clinics, patients can receive a rheumatology consult without having to drive to a hospital. Through telemedicine audio/video technology, with the assistance of a trained telemedicine nurse, a Geisinger rheumatologist can perform a "virtual joint count" to assess for joint pain, joint swelling and range of motion, correctly diagnose the patient’s condition, recommend treatment, and perform follow-up exams.
