Dr. Paulus describes research and Geisinger Ventures
Ronald A. Paulus, MD, MBA, is Executive Vice President, Clinical Operations and Chief Innovation Officer, responsible for clinical and administrative operations of the Clinical Enterprise, as well as, ensuring system wide innovation at Geisinger Health System.
Immediately prior to joining Geisinger, he was Chief Healthcare Officer for Quovadx, Inc. (previously NASDAQ: QVDX), responsible for healthcare strategy for this software and services company with more than 450 employees and 10,000 customers worldwide. Prior to its acquisition by Quovadx in September 2003, Dr. Paulus was co-founder, President and CEO of CareScience, Inc. (previously NASDAQ: CARE), where he had also served as President and Chief Operating Officer. CareScience, now part of Premier healthcare informatics, is a clinical solutions and data analytics provider which aims to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare and to support drug and product development for life sciences companies.
Before joining CareScience, Dr. Paulus served as Vice President, Operations of Salick Health Care, Inc. (previously NASDAQ: SHCI), a national provider of ambulatory services to individuals with high-risk, chronic diseases primarily focused on oncology and dialysis patients. Salick Health Care was a NASDAQ company acquired by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. While at Salick Health Care, he also served as Managing Director of its INFUSX subsidiary, a provider of alternate site therapies to patients with high risk, chronic diseases.
Dr. Paulus received his MD degree from The School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and his MBA, concentration in healthcare management, and BS in Economics from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Paulus has served on numerous national panels and advisory boards including: the Healthcare Information Technology Advisory Board for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the Inpatient Functionality and Interoperability Workgroups for the Certifying Commission on Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT), the eHealth Initiative Leadership Council, the Information Technology Workgroup of the Academic Medicine and Managed Care Forum, the Data Standards Workgroup of the National Quality Forum Institute of Medicine Summit on Information Technology, the IBM Healthcare and Lifesciences Advisory Council and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Alumni Leadership Council. He teaches in the Wharton Healthcare MBA Program and speaks nationally on innovation, new care model design, clinical transformation, EHR optimization, data analytics and pay-for-performance.

Denise Prince describes Geisinger Ventures and innovation in healthcare delivery
As Founder and Managing Partner, Geisinger Ventures, Ms. Prince oversees Geisinger Health System's venture and technology transfer strategies. She launched Geisinger Ventures in late 2003 with the goal of pursuing commercial opportunities to benefit the system’s core mission. Ms. Prince joined Geisinger in 1989 and has developed more than 10 new healthcare service businesses in both the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors. As Founder & Managing Partner, Geisinger Ventures, Ms. Prince oversees Geisinger Health System's venture and technology transfer strategies.
Since starting the Ventures group, Ms. Prince has been actively involved in the development of all of Geisinger Ventures portfolio companies and strategic partnerships. She currently serves as CEO of both Geisinger Medical Management Corporation and Geisinger Community Health Services, and is also a member of the board of ISS Solutions, Geisinger’s clinical engineering and IT services company and SureHealth LLC, a retail and specialty pharmacy company.
As Senior Vice President of Diversified Services for 12 years, Ms. Prince expanded Geisinger’s for-profit pharmacy capabilities to include retail, institutional and mail-order services. She led development of Geisinger’s home infusion pharmacy, home health and hospice businesses. Her other start-ups include community-based sleep laboratories, niche benefit management services, an outpatient surgery center, and a nurse-based program for improving healthcare provided to mentally challenged individuals. She also expanded programs in occupational medicine, vocational rehabilitation and personal emergency response services.
Before joining Geisinger, Ms. Prince worked as an associate for a healthcare management consulting firm, Amherst Associates (merged into Ernst and Young), and for hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area. She earned her B.A. cum laude in Economics and French from Mount Holyoke College, where she received the Paul F. Saintonge Prize in French and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She earned M.B.A. and Master of Public Health degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.
Ms. Prince is a member of numerous professional associations, including Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development. She is also active in several economic development organizations.

Jim Peters, MBA
Managing Partner, Geisinger Ventures

As Managing Partner, Geisinger Ventures, Mr. Peters oversees Geisinger Health System's venture and technology transfer strategies. He brings a combination of executive leadership, venture capital, healthcare, and technology experience to his role at Geisinger Health System.
Mr. Peters provides venture direction for initiatives involving information services, genomics and personalized medicine, specialty pharmacy, home infusion, remote patient monitoring, and consumer oriented models of care. In addition, Peters founded and serves as CEO of one of Geisinger Ventures’ portfolio companies, MedMining, an information services business serving the pharmaceutical research market that has consistently experienced significant top and bottom line growth since inception.
Prior to Geisinger, he served as Principal for Updata Venture Partners, a $450M venture capital firm that invests in early- and expansion-stage Software and Healthcare IT companies, and was a member of Updata’s Senior Leadership team that successfully delivered performance that scored in the top decile among its peers. Mr. Peters’ investment focus included market research, analytics, business intelligence and healthcare informatics. Prior to Updata, Peters founded and grew a successful technology services firm that serviced the medical and consumer packaged goods industries. Earlier in his career, he served as a Senior Consultant at Andersen Consulting in New York City.
Mr. Peters is a Senior Scholar appointed by the Department of Health Policy of Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He is a Member of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the Wharton Healthcare Management Alumni Association. In addition, he serves as Adjunct Lecturer at Lehigh University’s College of Business and Economics, has started a number of perennial fundraising initiatives, and is an active Parkinson’s disease advocate.
Peters serves on numerous Boards, including that of Ben Franklin Technology Partners, a nationally acclaimed organization dedicated to funding and growing Pennsylvania's technology-based economy. Peters received his BA from Lehigh University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and played Division I varsity baseball; he completed continuing professional education in Healthcare Strategy at the Harvard School of Public Health; and he earned an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Anthony LaMacchia, CPA

Mr. LaMacchia is responsible for providing managerial support to our existing portfolio companies and assisting with the due diligence and start-up leadership of newly acquired or internally developed companies.
Mr. LaMacchia is a senior health care and business development executive with extensive experience in both the non-profit and for-profit healthcare sectors. During his career he has been intimately involved in the start-up of two publicly traded healthcare companies. Prior to joining Geisinger, Mr. LaMacchia has spent the past 24 years in the for-profit sector in various senior management positions including: Chief Operating Officer and Senior Executive Vice President for Hythiam, Inc. (NASDAQ: HYTM); Chief Development Officer at GME Solutions, LLC; Chief Executive Officer and President of Response Oncology, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROI); and Chief Operating Officer, Salick Health Care, Inc. (NASDAQ: SHCI). In these roles Mr. LaMacchia has managed multi-site, multi-state ambulatory clinical operations in the areas of oncology and alcohol/substance abuse, and developed multiple joint-ventures with academic and academic-affiliated tertiary hospitals and physician groups. Mr. LaMacchia also has prior experience as a healthcare consultant at Ernst & Young and as a Medicare auditor.
Mr. LaMacchia received his B.S. Business Administration degree from California State University, Northridge. He is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in California, and a member of the AICPA and the American College of Healthcare Executives.
With a rich network of physicians and researchers, supportive collegial atmosphere, cross-clinic coordination and stable population, Geisinger is uniquely positioned as a vehicle for translating new medical breakthroughs for a "bedside to bench to bedside" approach. Mr. Allinson directs technology commercialization activities by translating innovation with Geisinger’s corporate and university partners. He manages licensing activities for strategic assets such as patents, copyrights, trade secrets and biomaterial for new innovations such as drug discovery and development, medical devices, laboratory diagnostics, genomics, and biotechnology. He is an active member of Licensing Executive Society, Association of University Technology Managers and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Allinson helped coordinate growth of successful biotech ventures. He helped grow Agentase from its inception to a successful biotechnology platform company. He served as a consultant to Innovation Works (a Ben Franklin venture partner), Carnegie Mellon University Office of Technology Transfer, and Fluorous Technologies (a drug discovery firm). He co-authored a biotechnology patent (U.S. #6,762,213) and has experience with government sponsored research and industry research. He received an M.B.A. from the Tepper School at Carnegie Mellon University, a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was an active member of the Pitt Rowing Club.

Steve Christensen, MBA
Associate
Mr. Christensen supports the incubation of new venture ideas within the Geisinger Health System. He provides business development and strategic support, financial modeling, and investment analysis for programs from their concept stage to their independent operation. His experience in market research and business plan writing lend valuable insight to new project formulation.
Mr. Christensen’s earlier success includes founding Nittany Lion Venture Capital, an early-stage venture fund where he served as a Managing Director. He served as an Analyst for Ben Franklin Technology Partners – CNP, where he designed a portfolio management system and investment screening platform. He also worked for the Penn State Small Business Development Center where he consulted for regional start-ups. Prior to his work in new venture creation, Mr. Christensen was a former U.S. Senate aide and government lobbyist.
He received an M.B.A. from The Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business, and a B.A. in Political Science from Brigham Young University.
Lisa K. Miller
Associate Executive Assistant
Ms. Miller provides advanced administrative support to the managing partners of Ventures. She serves as primary liaison for her principals with system staff, representatives from external organizations, and executive leaders. She also manages special projects.
Ms. Miller joined Geisinger in 2004, providing clinical and administrative support in Women's Health until 2008. Most recently she served as senior administrative support to the Strategic Network Development team.
