The Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley receives three-year accreditation

Jan. 4, WILKES-BARRE — The cancer program at The Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley has received a three-year approval with commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

A Commission on Cancer physician surveyor evaluated Geisinger’s compliance to 35 standards in seven different areas: Institutional and Programmatic Resources, Cancer Committee Leadership, Cancer Data Management/Cancer Registry, Clinical Management, Community Outreach, Professional Education & Staff Support, and Quality Improvement. Commendations are given when a medical center exceeds Commission on Cancer standards. The Henry Cancer Center received commendations in all seven areas.

“The three-year accreditation with commendation is a result of our team providing outstanding care and support to our cancer patients and their families,” said Mohammed Mohiuddin, MD, Medical Director of Henry Cancer Center and Co-Director of Geisinger Health System’s Cancer Institute.

Since its inception in 1922, the Commission’s goals have been to reduce morbidity and mortality of cancer through education, standard setting and the monitoring of quality care. Beginning in the 1930s, the Commission established standards and a program of review and approval for cancer programs. Currently almost 1,500 facilities have gained approval of their cancer program.

The Henry Cancer Center provides comprehensive cancer consultation, diagnosis and treatment, including clinical trials, for all types of adult cancers. Located at Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes-Barre, The Henry Cancer Center is a partnership between Geisinger and Fox Chase Cancer Center- a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. This elite collaboration aims to develop cancer prevention strategies, cultivate cancer research, enhance diagnostic techniques and provide access to advanced treatment and clinical trials for people in northeastern Pennsylvania.
