One important indicator of quality is whether a hospital and its staff are recognized by independent organizations devoted to measuring healthcare quality. Listed below are honors, awards and accreditations given to Geisinger:

  • Geisinger Medical Center nursing care cited among the best in the U.S. by
    U.S. News & World Report, 2009
  •  Geisinger-Scenery Park Endoscopy & Surgery Centre accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, 2009.
  • Geisinger Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Glenn Steele Jr., MD, PhD, has been named among Modern Healthcare magazine's eighth annual 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare, 2009.
  • The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that Medicare beneficiaries who receive most of their care from Geisinger experienced improved quality of care at a lower cost to the federal Medicare program as compared to Medicare beneficiaries receiving their care in the same region from other providers, 2009.
  • The cancer programs of Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, have been granted three-year terms of accreditation with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, 2009
  • Geisinger Health System has again been listed among the country's "100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems," 2009.
  • The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) recently awarded Geisinger Health System with the High Performance in the Revenue Cycle Award, 2009.
  • Ten Geisinger physicians were recently recognized in a listing presented by USA Today newspaper. “Most Influential Doctors” is an analysis by the medical information firm Qforma and lists physicians considered the “thought-leaders” around the country, 2009.
  • Geisinger Medical Center recently received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award, 2009.
  • Geisinger Medical Center’s respiratory care team recently received quality designation from the American Association for Respiratory Care, 2009.
  • The Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Geisinger Medical Center has received accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), 2009
  • The Vascular Lab at Geisinger-Gray’s Woods has been awarded accreditation from the Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL), 2009.
  • Geisinger Health Plan was named the 2008 “Outstanding Health Plan” by the nation’s premier disease management trade group, DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance.
  • Geisinger Wyoming Valley has earned reaccreditation as a Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, making it one of only eight Chest Pain Centers in the state, 2008.
  • Geisinger-Gray’s Woods has received the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for new construction, becoming the only healthcare facility in the state of Pennsylvania to earn the designation and one of seven in the nation, 2008.
  • Geisinger President and CEO Glenn D. Steele, Jr., MD, PhD, joins a select group of 20 individuals named to Health Leaders’ magazine’s annual list of those who are “truly making a difference” in today’s complex health care world, 2008.
