One important indicator of quality is whether a hospital and its staff are recognized by independent organizations devoted to measuring healthcare quality. Listed below are honors, awards and accreditations given to Geisinger:
- Geisinger President and CEO Glenn D. Steele, Jr., MD, PhD, joins a select group of 20 individuals named to Health Leaders’ magazine’s annual list of those who are “truly making a difference” in today’s complex health care world.
- Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) was named to the 2008 Thomson Reuters (formerly Thomson) 100 Top Hospitals® Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success list, which annually identifies high-performing cardiovascular hospitals nationally and sets performance targets for managing and improving cardiovascular services
- Geisinger Health System was named to the 2008 InformationWeek 500 list of the nation's most innovative users of information technology
- Geisinger Gold and Geisinger Health Plan rank #3 for Medicare and #5 for commercial health plans in the nation
- The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) designates Geisinger Medical Center as a Magnet hospital, 2008
- The Society of Chest Pain Centers granted Geisinger Medical Center the designation of Accredited Chest Pain Center in 2007. GMC is the seventh hospital in Pennsylvania to receive full accreditation.
- Geisinger Health System received The American Medical Group Association’s prestigious Preeminence Award, presented annually to AMGA member groups or IPA physician-administrator leadership teams in recognition of exceptional leadership; innovation and vision; contributions to the advancement of quality; effective health care delivery practices and structure; and outstanding contributions to the local public community in which the medical group or IPA is located. The award was presented at the AMGA’s 2007 Annual Conference, held Feb. 28 – March 3, 2007.
- The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association has designated Geisinger Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Care for 2007, recognizing a full range of bariatric surgical care services including inpatient care, post-operative care, follow-up and patient education. This national program creates an unprecedented level of transparency with two goals - engaging consumers to make more informed health care decisions and collaborating with providers to improve quality outcomes and affordability.
- Geisinger Health System has been named to the 2007 Verispan Integrated Health Networks Top 100 list. This is the fifth time that Geisinger has achieved recognition by Verispan for being among the nation’s top integrated health networks. The rankings are based on health systems’ integration of operations, clinical quality, financial performance, efficiency and breadth of services.
- Geisinger Health System has been named to the national listing of 100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems, published by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine four times: in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2006.
- Modern Healthcare and HIMSS named Glenn Steele, Jr., MD, PhD, president and chief executive officer of Geisinger Health System, as the 2006 CEO IT Achievement Award recipient.
- The Association for Information and Imaging Management (AIIM) organization awardes its 2006 Best Practices Award for the use of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) technologies in healthcare to Geisinger Health System.
- Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley were both named to the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success list in 2006.
- The Society of Chest Pain Centers granted Geisinger Wyoming Valley the designation of Accredited Chest Pain Center in 2006.
- Geisinger Health System earned a prominent national ranking in the 2006 Verispan IHN 100, the ninth edition of Verispan’s annual assessment of the 100 most highly integrated healthcare networks (IHNs).
- The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons granted The Henry Cancer Center program at Geisinger Wyoming Valley a three-year approval with commendation.
- Geisinger Health System was listed for the third time on the InformationWeek 500 list in 2006. The list is unique among corporate rankings because it spotlights the nation's most innovative users of information technology.
- Best Doctors in America lists 36 Geisinger physicians in its 2005-2006 list.
- Geisinger Medical Center’s cancer program received a three-year approval with commendation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons.
