National Recognition 2002 - 2011

One important indicator of quality is whether a hospital and its staff are recognized by independent organizations devoted to measuring healthcare quality. Listed below are honors, awards and accreditations given to Geisinger between 2002 and 2011:

  • Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center are among the 2011 Top Performing Hospitals in the Premier healthcare alliance’s national QUEST® collaborative.
  • Geisinger HomeCare was named a 2011 HomeCare Elite home health agency, ranking it in the top 25 percent of home health agencies in the United States, based on quality outcomes, process measure implementation and financial performance.
  • Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center were awarded the National Research Corporation’s Consumer Choice Award for 2011-12.
  • Geisinger Health System was recognized by Healthcare Purchasing News as one of the nation’s top healthcare supply chain programs to watch in 2011.
  • Geisinger Health Plan and Geisinger Gold have been named for the fourth year in a row the top-ranked private and Medicare health plans in Pennsylvania - and 8th and 9th respectively in the nation.
  • Geisinger Health System has been listed among the country’s “100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems.” by Hospitals & Health Networks Magazine for the ninth time.
  • Geisinger Health System was recently named to the Becker’s Hospital Review “100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare” list for 2011.
  • The Geisinger Medical Center Emergency Department was recently named one of 20 institutions nationwide to receive the first annual Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award.
  • The American Medical Group Association presented its 2011 Acclaim Award to Geisinger and three other honorees. Geisinger was recognized for Transforming Care Delivery: Patient-Centric, Value-Driven Innovation.
  • Geisinger has been included for the eighth time in the 2011 InformationWeek 500, a list of organizations that are leaders in the use of innovative technology.
  • Geisinger Health System received the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management’s 2011 Award for Healthcare Supply Chain Innovation.
  • Respiratory Care Services at Geisinger Medical Center received the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition Award from the American Association of Respiratory Care.
  • Geisinger Health System earned the American Heart Association’s Gold Certification as a Start! Fit-Friendly Company, which is granted to companies that aim to improve the health and wellness of employees.
  • Geisinger Medical Center received the 2011 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks Award for overall organizational performance.
  • Sixty-two Geisinger Health System physicians in 27 medical specialties were named to the national Best Doctors list for 2011-2012.
  • Geisinger Health System was named to the 2011 SDI IHN 100, a list of the most integrated healthcare networks (IHN) in the nation.
  • Geisinger Health System was named to Security Magazine's "2010 Security 500" list, recognizing the organizations worldwide with the best-managed security practices.
  • Geisinger Health System was named to the Healthcare Supply Chain Top 25 for 2010 by Gartner Inc., a leading information technology research and advisory company.
  • Geisinger Health System received the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's 2010 Silver Medal of Honor for Organ Donation.
  • Geisinger Medical Center was named to the 2010 Thomson Reuters 50 Top Hospitals Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success list.
  • The The Richard and Marion Pearsall Heart Hospital at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center was designated a 2010 Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care® by Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
  • Geisinger HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital receives the 2010 National Presidents' Circle Award for outstanding performance in development of clinical programs, quality of patient care services, employee retention and overall operational excellence.
  • Geisinger Health Plan was ranked the top health plan in Pennsylvania and fifth in the nation according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance's Health Insurance Plan Rankings Private 2010-11 list, for third consecutive year
  • GWV’s Richard and Marion Pearsall Heart Hospital is named to 2010 Consumer Reports Top 50 in heart surgery list.
  • The Respiratory Care Services team at Geisinger Medical Center was recognized by the American Association for Respiratory Care in 2010 for strict safety and quality standards related to the delivery of respiratory care services by qualified respiratory therapists.
  • Glenn Steele Jr., MD, PhD, ranked 35 out of 100 in Modern Healthcare magazine's 2010 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.
  • The practices of the System Therapeutics Department at Geisinger Medical Center have been recognized in 2010 by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists as a national model, as part of the organization’s Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative. 
  • Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center received the American Stroke Association's "Get with the Guidelines" Stroke Bronze Performance Achievement Award. Geisinger Medical Center was awarded Gold and Gold Plus Awards for quality procedures and outcomes in 2009. Gold Plus is the highest level of recognition offered by the ASA. 
  • Geisinger Medical Center was designated in 2010 a Blue Distinction® Center for Knee and Hip Replacement by Highmark Blue Shield. 
  • Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center was awarded the 2010 Vista Award by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering of the American Hospital Association.
  • Geisinger was listed among the country's "100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems." 
  • Geisinger received the elite Seven Seals Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a U.S. Department of Defense organization, in 2010. 
  • The Healthcare Financial Management Association awarded Geisinger the High Performance in the Revenue Cycle Award in 2010 for the second consecutive year. 
  • Geisinger Medical Center received the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks Award based on overall organizational performance in 2010. 
  • The Health Research & Educational Trust, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association, named Glenn D. Steele Jr., MD, PhD, the recipient of its 2010 TRUST Award.
  • Geisinger was named to the nation’s list of the most integrated healthcare networks, the “2010 SDI IHN (Integrated Health Network) 100, which was published Modern Healthcare. Geisinger was presented with the 2009 Safe-RxTM Award by Surescripts® for its contribution to Pennsylvania's progress and leadership in advancing the use of e-prescribing technology.
  • Geisinger was included in the 2009 InformationWeek 500, a list of companies that are leaders in their use of innovative technology. 
  • Geisinger Medical Center was named to the 2009 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success list. 
  • Geisinger Gold and Geisinger Health Plan have been named among the top-ranked commercial and Medicare health plans in Pennsylvania and are in the top 10 nationally for quality and service. U.S. News & World Report produced the list in conjunction with the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Geisinger Gold is ranked No. 3 among Medicare plans and Geisinger Health Plan is ranked No. 6 among commercial plans, according to the 2009-10 list.
  • Geisinger Medical Center’s Infection Control team was honored by Unison Health Plan with its Gold Star Provider Award for reducing hospital-acquired infections by 39 percent from 2006 to 2007. 
  • Geisinger Medical Center nursing care was cited among the best in the United States by
    U.S. News & World Report in 2009. 
  • Geisinger Medical Center’s respiratory care team received quality designation from the American Association for Respiratory Care in 2009.
  • Geisinger's Supply Chain Services received a Supply Chain Innovation Award from the Premier healthcare alliance, 2008
  • Geisinger's Supply Chain Services named materials management department of the year by Healthcare Purchasing News, 2008
  • Geisinger Health Plan was named the 2008 “Outstanding Health Plan” by the nation’s premier disease management trade group, DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance.
  • Geisinger Wyoming Valley has earned reaccreditation as a Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, making it one of only eight Chest Pain Centers in the state, 2008.
  • Geisinger-Gray’s Woods has received the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for new construction, becoming the only healthcare facility in the state of Pennsylvania to earn the designation and one of seven in the nation, 2008.
  • Geisinger President and CEO Glenn D. Steele, Jr., MD, PhD, joins a select group of 20 individuals named to Health Leaders’ magazine’s annual list of those who are “truly making a difference” in today’s complex health care world, 2008.
  • Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) was named to the 2008 Thomson Reuters (formerly Thomson) 100 Top Hospitals® Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success list, which annually identifies high-performing cardiovascular hospitals nationally and sets performance targets for managing and improving cardiovascular services
  • Geisinger Health System was named to the 2008 InformationWeek 500 list of the nation's most innovative users of information technology
  • Geisinger Gold and Geisinger Health Plan rank #3 for Medicare and #5 for commercial health plans in the nation, 2008
  • The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) designates Geisinger Medical Center as a Magnet hospital, 2008
  • The Society of Chest Pain Centers granted Geisinger Medical Center the designation of Accredited Chest Pain Center in 2007. GMC is the seventh hospital in Pennsylvania to receive full accreditation.
  •  Geisinger Health System received The American Medical Group Association’s prestigious Preeminence Award, presented annually to AMGA member groups or IPA physician-administrator leadership teams in recognition of exceptional leadership; innovation and vision; contributions to the advancement of quality; effective health care delivery practices and structure; and outstanding contributions to the local public community in which the medical group or IPA is located. The award was presented at the AMGA’s 2007 Annual Conference, held Feb. 28 – March 3, 2007.
  • The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association has designated Geisinger Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Care for 2007, recognizing a full range of bariatric surgical care services including inpatient care, post-operative care, follow-up and patient education. This national program creates an unprecedented level of transparency with two goals - engaging consumers to make more informed health care decisions and collaborating with providers to improve quality outcomes and affordability.
  • Geisinger Health System has been named to the 2007 Verispan Integrated Health Networks Top 100 list. This is the fifth time that Geisinger has achieved recognition by Verispan for being among the nation’s top integrated health networks. The rankings are based on health systems’ integration of operations, clinical quality, financial performance, efficiency and breadth of services.
  • Geisinger Health System has been named to the national listing of 100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems, published by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine four times: in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2006.
  • Modern Healthcare and HIMSS named Glenn Steele, Jr., MD, PhD, president and chief executive officer of Geisinger Health System, as the 2006 CEO IT Achievement Award recipient.
  • The Association for Information and Imaging Management (AIIM) organization awardes its 2006 Best Practices Award for the use of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) technologies in healthcare to Geisinger Health System.
  • Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley were both named to the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success list in 2006.
  • The Society of Chest Pain Centers granted Geisinger Wyoming Valley the designation of Accredited Chest Pain Center in 2006.
  • Geisinger Health System earned a prominent national ranking in the 2006 Verispan IHN 100, the ninth edition of Verispan’s annual assessment of the 100 most highly integrated healthcare networks (IHNs).
  • The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons granted The Henry Cancer Center program at Geisinger Wyoming Valley a three-year approval with commendation.
  • Geisinger Health System was listed for the third time on the InformationWeek 500 list in 2006.  The list is unique among corporate rankings because it spotlights the nation's most innovative users of information technology.
  • Best Doctors in America lists 36 Geisinger physicians in its 2005-2006 list.
  • Geisinger Medical Center’s cancer program received a three-year approval with commendation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons.
  • Geisinger Medical Center was named an American Society for Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS).
  • The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) awarded Geisinger Health system $1.5 million to launch a health records-sharing project in one of the nation's first rural regional health information organizations (RHIO).
  • Geisinger Health System President and CEO Glenn Steele, Jr., MD, was named to The Commonwealth Fund’s  Commission on a High Performance Health System in 2005.
  • Vignette Corp. awarded Geisinger Health System The Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) Best Practices Award 2004 for its use of Vignette-Integrated Document Management solutions to create a comprehensive HIPAA-compliant system which manages the entire medical record of its patients.
  • The Technology Council of Central Pennsylvania gave Geisinger Health System its Best Application of Technology award in 2004, which recognizes the creative application of existing technology to improve practices, processes or services.
  • Geisinger Health System received eHealthcare Leadership Awards for its web site in 2002, 2003 and 2004 
  • Geisinger Health System chief information officer Frank M. Richards was recognized by Computerworld, a leading weekly newspaper for information technology (IT) leaders, as one of the business world’s Premier 100 IT Leaders in 2003.
  •  David L. Weiss, MD, Director of Geisinger Medical Center’s Department of Radiology, was recognized by Health Imaging & IT as one of Who’s Who, “100 Names You Need to Know” in 2003.
  • Geisinger Health System received the Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award for transforming the health care industry through the use of technology in 2002
