Research has been a fundamental and critical aspect of Geisinger’s mission since the health center was founded early last century. In addition to the research being conducted in Geisinger’s dedicated research centers, system-wide clinical departments and service-line faculty are engaged in numerous investigative projects. Geisinger’s departments of Cardiology, Rheumatology, and Vascular Surgery and both pediatric and adult oncology departments are particularly active in both investigator-initiated research and third-party trials. Efforts in oncology are directly facilitated by Geisinger’s membership in many adult oncology cooperative groups. These groups are sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and by the Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) award from the National Institutes of Health, as well as by a similar grant from Pennsylvania’s Department of Health.

Geisinger’s clinical departments and service lines include practice clinic sites across central and northeastern PA and its 12 specialty clinics, such as Knapper Pediatrics and the Woodbine Outpatient Surgery Center. Geisinger’s three hospitals - Danville, South Wilkes-Barre, and Wyoming Valley - and Geisinger’s nationally recognized addiction treatment program, Marworth, include 726 physicians and 257 residents and fellows.
