Geisinger's Obesity Institute leverages Geisinger's numerous population and laboratory based research efforts and resources into an interdisciplinary, system-wide program that facilitates, sustains, and supports obesity research and interventions for patients within the Geisinger Health System. Institute investigations focus on identifying preventative lifestyle modifications, studying pharmacological, surgical and treatment options, and applying state-of-the-art molecular approaches to obesity and associated health conditions.
The Institute is a collaborative effort between researchers at Geisinger's Center for Clinical Studies, the Weis Center for Research, and the Center for Health Studies. The Institute is also supported by two of the most active and comprehensive clinical obesity programs in the country: Geisinger's Pediatric Program and Geisinger's Center for Nutrition and Weight Management and bariatric surgery.
Institute researchers have access to Geisinger's state-of-the-art instrumentation and research support capabilities which include the Geisinger Clinic Genomics Core, Bio-specimen Bank and MyCode Project of blood, serum and tissue specimens from consented patients. Institute researchers also have access to Geisinger's large, rural integrated healthcare delivery systems, a rich patient population, and the Electronic Health Record, a database of 2.5 million Geisinger patients.
Obesity-Related Clinical Research Projects supported by the Institute are numerous and involve clinic physicians and scientists from a wide breadth of disciplines. For example:
- The Institute has built a comprehensive clinical database and bio-bank on patients with morbid obesity that is among the largest in the world. The data and bio-samples are being used to investigate fatty liver disease, a condition associated with morbid obesity that can result in cirrhosis.
- In collaboration with the Genomic Medicine Program, the Institute also supports research to identify genetic variants that can be used to predict the likelihood that bariatric surgery patients will maintain post-surgery weight loss targets.
Strong external affiliations with academic institutions and health care centers include collaborative efforts in genomics, epidemiology, aging, and childhood obesity.
The Obesity Institute is also an active member of the Obesity Action Coalition, a non-profit coalition dedicated to advocating and engaging in state and national obesity education.
