Institutional Review Board

The Geisinger Institutional Review Board (GIRB) provides a mechanism of oversight for conducting research involving human participants within the Geisinger Health System.

The GIRB consists of both scientific and lay members whose purpose is the protection of the rights and welfare of humans voluntarily participating in research. The board is charged with initial and continuing review of all research involving humans with the authority to approve, request conditional modifications or disapprove that research so that it may be conducted in accordance with the principles established by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Office of Human Research Protection, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Health Insurance Portability Act.

Certification of Geisinger’s intent to comply with federal regulations is verified in our Federalwide Assurance of Protection for Human Subjects held in the Office of Human Research Protection.
