Geisinger Research pursues an ambitious agenda with the long term goal of directly impacting the health of our patients. A unique aspect of Geisinger research is that, unlike traditional academic approaches, scientists are integrally connected to the clinical enterprise. This facilitates interdisciplinary team-based collaborations to address clinically relevant questions.
Research at Geisinger spans multiple disciplines. The three research centers—the Sigfried and Janet Weis Center for Research, the Geisinger Center for Health Research, and the Geisinger Center for Clinical Studies — are home to internationally-renowned investigators with expertise in epidemiology, molecular and cellular biology, rural health, genomics, healthcare information technology, development of new healthcare models and clinical trials management. Research in clinical divisions addresses disease-specific initiatives and provides sites for clinical trials. Major research initiatives include genomic medicine, development of new models of care, epidemiological and effectiveness studies, e-initiatives, and clinical trials.
Leadership for Geisinger’s research enterprise is provided by Bruce Hamory, MD who serves as the chief research officer and chief medical officer, emeritus; David Carey, PhD, director of the Weis Center for Research and Associate Chief Research Officer; Peter Berger, MD, Associate Chief Research Officer and Director of the Center for Clinical Studies; Walter “Buzz” Stewart, MD, MPH, director of the Center for Health Research and the Associate Chief Research Officer; and Judith Argon, Chief Administrative Officer for Research.
Research in the clinical divisions is guided by the division chairs and department chiefs; some divisions have directors of research. A number of administrative directors and managers provide organizational support to the research community.
Message from Bruce Hamory
The research enterprise at Geisinger is dedicated to improving the care of our patients and facilitating the education of young physicians and other health professionals. This is as true of our laboratory research efforts as it is of our health services research and clinical trials.
Geisinger's unique strengths lie in the application of technology (especially Health Information Technology), and redesigned systems of care to facilitate the delivery of higher quality, lower cost health care. Our significant efforts in genomics (personalized medicine) and health services research are also dedicated to the end of being able to rapidly determine the most effective, efficient care for an individual and to apply this knowledge in our daily practice.
At Geisinger, we attempt to engage our physicians and each of our patients in this quest to use the latest knowledge of medical science, and management science to deliver effective care in the most efficient manner possible. Research lies at the heart of this quest.
