Cardiovascular Anesthesia

The Cardiovascular Anesthesia Division provides services for a wide variety of cardiothoracic and vascular procedures, for both adult and pediatric patients. The division participates in the Cardiac Surgical Division’s ProvenCare program, which ensures that treatment follows the best evidence-based care for cardiac surgery patients.

Cardiovascular anesthesia is used for the following:

  • Cardiac catheterization procedures
  • Complex congenital heart surgery
  • Lung isolation to facilitate cardiac and thoracic surgery
  • Minimally invasive coronary bypass (CABG) and valve surgery
  • Monitoring ischemia (insufficient supply of blood to an organ, usually due to a blocked artery) using transesophageal echocardiography
  • Off-pump coronary bypass surgery
  • Postoperative pain relief for thoracic and vascular procedures, with daily follow-up by the Acute Pain Service
  • Spinal cord protection for thoracoabdominal aneurysm surgery, via lumbar drains
  • Valve repair surgery
