Obstetric Anesthesia

At Geisinger, our anesthesia team works to enhance the childbirth experience through appropriate anesthesia and analgesia (pain management). We are available around the clock to meet the needs of patients and monitor their pain relief levels throughout the stages of labor. We work closely with the obstetric team to ensure the safety of both mother and baby during pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum period.

We provide safe, effective anesthesia and analgesia for all obstetric delivery methods, including

  • Vaginal deliveries
  • Caesarean sections
  • High-risk deliveries

Different types of anesthesia used include epidural, spinal and general. Epidurals are most frequently used for vaginal deliveries, and epidural/spinals are appropriate for Caesarian sections. In both cases, epidurals and spinals allow the mother to be conscious for the birth and protect the baby from exposure to general anesthesia. General anesthesia is used only when spinal and epidural options are not appropriate.
