Geisinger Medical Center offers a comprehensive panel of weight-loss services for your patients who are overweight or suffering from obesity and morbid obesity with co-morbid conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea or fatty liver disease. Our comprehensive services range from conservative weight management programs to bariatric surgery. Geisinger’s multidisciplinary team consists of obesity medicine specialists, physician assistants, registered dieticians, clinical nurse specialists, behavioral health specialists and bariatric surgeons.

Geisinger’s Center for Nutrition and Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery holds the prestigious Center of Excellence designation by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS). The Bariatric Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.

Weight Management Program

The goal of treatment at Geisinger’s Center for Nutrition and Weight Management is to improve the health of your patients through modest, sustained weight reduction and continued long-term management of their weight for a better quality of life. Our comprehensive program provides treatment for patients suffering from obesity and other significant health-related problems including:

Bariatric Surgery Program

To serve your weight-loss surgery patients, our program involves extensive education prior to surgery. As a Center or Excellence, patients undergoing bariatric surgery at Geisinger enter into a six-month pre-surgical, multidisciplinary program that incorporates:

  • Medical evaluation
  • Behavioral medicine
  • Nutrition counseling and evaluation
  • Group educational sessions
  • Support groups

Our program also provides support, before, during and after weight loss.

  • BMI > 27 with co-morbid conditions
  • BMI > 30

When to Refer for Consideration of Bariatric Surgery

    • Metabolic syndrome

    • Hyperlipidemia
