“I was trapped in my home. I couldn’t even drive a car. I slept on the floor. My life was eating and watching TV. I had sleep apnea, high blood pressure, I was diabetic, had joint pain and suffered from depression. I had tried everything—diet pills, Phen Fen and fad diets. I would lose some, then gain it back. A couple of years ago, I decided I just couldn’t live like this anymore, so I started looking online for a way to change my life. I made an appointment with Dr. Still.
When I met him, he had to pull a couch out into the hallway to meet with me because I couldn’t get into his office. I got into the program and had to lose 100 pounds before I had the surgery. When I had the surgery, on April 12, 2007, I call that my new birthday. I’ve lost a total of 300 pounds. I can walk, drive the car, go fishing, help around the house. My goal is to get below 200 pounds. My advice? Do the research. Realize it’s not 100% guaranteed. It’s OK to be afraid. Talk to other people who’ve done it at support groups. Understand that it’s a lifestyle change. It’s important to know as much as you can to make a smart decision.”
