The NAPBC: Working to Ensure the Quality of Your Breast Care

NAPBC is a national coalition of professional healthcare organizations dedicated to the highest quality of care for women and men diagnosed with diseases of the breast. The NAPBC promotes a holistic approach to treatment for patients diagnosed with diseases of the breast, and provides a framework for a continuum of care that meets the needs of the whole person and not just the disease.

NAPBC logoGeisinger Wyoming Valley was one of the first four in the country to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) as a Breast Center of Excellence. Geisinger Medical Center received NAPCB Accreditation in June 2010.

Geisinger Medical Center offers a weekly multidisciplinary breast cancer clinic since September 2005, which is a novel approach to breast care in this region.

The Coordinated Breast Program at The Center for Women’s Imaging at Geisinger Wyoming Valley is committed to serving the women of Northeast Pennsylvania with the care and compassion they deserve.

Centers that seek NAPBC accreditation do so voluntarily. Participation includes completion of a comprehensive on-line application and an on-site inspection by an NAPBC surveyor who verifies the availability of 17 components of care, and validates compliance with 27 evidence-based standards of care required to achieve NAPBC accreditation. To maintain accreditation the center is required to document ongoing compliance with the standards on an annual basis and undergo an on-site inspection every three years. Patients and the public have access to the NAPBC website to search for accredited centers near their home and may print a comprehensive breast center profile unique to that center.

The NAPBC is a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.  To learn more about the NAPBC, visit the NAPBC website at http://www.accreditedbreastcenters.org.
