Geisinger – A NCI Community Cancers Center Program (NCCCP) Selected Site

What is the NCCCP?

NCCP logoThe NCCCP is a collection of thirty community hospitals across the country designated to receive funds from the National Cancer Institute to advance cancer care in rural, disparate, minority and underserved populations. The mission of the NCCCP is to:

  • Reduce cancer healthcare disparities
  • Bring more Americans into a system of high quality cancer care
  • Increase participation in clinical trials
  • Improve information sharing among community cancer centers

Benefits of Geisinger’s Affiliation with the National Cancer Institute

For many years, The Geisinger Cancer Institute has provided patients with comprehensive cancer screening, prevention, treatment and palliative care. Patients diagnosed with cancer receive coordinated medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services here. Since our affiliation with NCI, patients now have expanded options for their cancer care, including:

  • Geisinger is making it easier for rural, elderly and other medically underserved communities to receive cancer prevention and treatment services. We are increasing the number of free cancer screening events we offer to the public and educating more area residents about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection.
  • Our patients are assigned an NCCCP Nurse Navigator – a specially trained nurse who provides personal assistance arranging financial support, transportation, records coordination and other cancer care services and helps identify clinical trials that might be appropriate.
  • Patients have more options for participating in cancer clinical trials. Volunteers may benefit from trials by receiving the very latest prevention and treatment advances before they are available to the general public.
  • We are enhancing our symptom management, end-of-life care and survivorship support.
  • Behind the scenes, we are involved in an effort to link our hospital to other community hospitals electronically for sharing information that will improve cancer prevention and treatment, and provide researchers with a greater volume of patient-volunteered medical information.
  • The Geisinger Cancer Institute is also enhancing its ability to collect and store tissue, blood and other biospecimens to advance research knowledge of normal and cancerous cells and to enhance the accuracy of laboratory test results, which will ultimately guide patients’ treatment options.
