Cardiac Rehab: Taking Steps to a Healthier Life
Rehabilitation speeds recovery and helps reduce the risk of recurring heart disease. At Geisinger, the rehabilitation team works closely with each patient's primary care physician to establish individual goals and a patient care plan.
The plan addresses all of their needs, and includes one-on-one counseling regarding diet, tobacco use, stress, health maintenance and more. And activity is medically-supervised by certified advanced cardiac life support nurses and exercise physiologists who offer caring, expert support.
Cardiac rehabilitation builds muscle strength, endurance, flexibility and confidence for those recovering from:
- A heart attack
- Coronary bypass surgery
- Angioplasty/stent
- Heart valve surgery
- Heart transplant
- Stable cardiovascular disease/angina
Patients with angina, pacemakers, or peripheral vascular disease, or those with multiple risk factors, may also benefit.
Additionally, the Cardiac Maintenance Program promotes activity after the initial 12-week cardiac rehab program, so patients can continue monitored exercise on a lifelong program of health and wellness.
