Clinical Nutrition 

Accurate, up to date information based on scientific evidenceClinical Nutrition Services enhances the quality of life by providing optimal treatment to patients and families while educating about diet and lifestyle choices. Teaching the public, dietetic students, and other health professionals about current nutrition practices is also important. This involves using research to gain knowledge and improve results, public health, and the practice of medicine. Lastly, it means participating in community organizations to promote nutrition information to improve overall health.

Registered dietitians (RDs) at Geisinger Medical Center, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, and Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre Medical Center are committed to delivering excellent patient care. They take pride in providing accurate, up to date information based on scientific evidence. Patient education materials are regularly revised and updated to provide easy-to-read information to patients.

Inpatient RDs monitor the health and wellness of patients who are admitted to the hospital. This includes daily management of nutritional status related to food and supplement intake, lab values, weight gain or loss, difficulties chewing or swallowing, appetite status, and enteral and parenteral nutrition management. They cover 17 units seven days a week and someone is on call to answer questions on Sundays. Additional inpatient units staffed with a Geisinger dietitian include:

Geisinger Health South Rehabilitation Center

RDs provide patient care by monitoring nutritional status, oral intake, laboratory values, supplemental preferences, food concerns and patient satisfaction.

Dialysis units

RDs manage patient needs at the Geisinger Medical Center dialysis units by monitoring weekly labs and distributing periodic report cards for patients to track patient progress while regularly evaluating their diets. Geisinger RDs also staff the Selinsgrove Dialysis Unit and Mount Carmel Dialysis Unit.

Additional nutrition services offered within Geisinger include Gastroenterology & Nutrition, which consists of a weight management clinic, malnutrition clinic, and home tube-feeding clinic.
