Geisinger Health System registered dietitians (RDs) are committed to delivering excellent patient care. Our goal is to improve patient outcomes, the nutritional health of the public and the practice of medicine through the use of evidenced-based medical nutrition therapy and through educating dietetic students and other healthcare members about current standards of practice.

Inpatient dietitians on all campuses monitor the health and wellness of patients who are admitted to the hospital. This includes daily management of nutritional status related to food and supplement intake, lab values, weight gain or loss, difficulties chewing or swallowing, appetite status, and enteral (tube feeding) and parenteral (IV) nutrition management. All patient units are covered six days a week and a dietitian is on call on Sundays should an urgent need arise.

Geisinger's outpatient dietitians teach patients how to make healthy food choices and lifestyle changes. The dietitians use an individualized approach toward each patient's lifestyle, wellness and fitness goals. They work in partnership with the patient and other healthcare members to promote positive changes in exercise and behavior. In addition, outpatient RDs provide classes throughout the Geisinger community on a variety of nutrition topics including chronic kidney disease, kidney failure dialysis options, diabetes management, prevention of kidney stones, and heart healthy diet following cardiac surgery.

Other Services

Geisinger RDs are involved in other contracted services including DaVita Dialysis, Health South Rehabilitation Hospital, Select Specialty Care Hospital, and ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Clinic. In addition, Geisinger RDs and dietetic interns provide trustworthy, science-based food and nutrition information on nutrition topics of public interest to the community at various locations throughout the year.
